So how come my dog can wolf down a 3 oz piece of meat in the blink of an eye yet if I feed him a Cheerio he will sit and chew that thing for 10 seconds.

I think that's standard issue for doggies.

Casey will chew and chew and chew a piece of lettuce or apple and finally swallow it, but the chicken or fish or whatever high quality protein is gone in a blink.

They probably can't tell the difference between something crunchy and a bone. Bones need to be thoroughly chewed.

Was he supposed to have the meat? I firmly believe if they find something they know they aren't supposed to have, they can eat it in 2 seconds flat. My aunt's dog once ate a bag of bagels in about 4.6 seconds. But to eat her 1/2 cup of dog food would take her 15 minutes. I chalked it up to the "let me eat as much as I can before someone catches me and makes me stop" phenomenon. I don't know if that was the case here though, if it was only 3 oz you might have wanted him to have it...I just wanted to share my story about my aunt's dog.
