Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 2/11/09

#1 Post by Loco Rovo's Interpreter » Wed Feb 11, 2009 5:28 am

It's almost time for pitchers and catchers to report to Spring training which means two things.... One, it means it's time for everyone to quit caring about the NBA. And two, it's time for me to get up off this beach and get back to the important task of helping to run LB's Merry Men into the ground for yet another disappointing season in the BBBL. This isn't the first time LB has allowed to me run a Wacky Wednesday game for him, I got the honor in December 2004 as well. And like that game, the inspiration for the songs in this game is past MLB players who had the misfortune to have donned the tights for the Merry Men. The difference this time around though is I was able to construct the game using only players who completely and totally sucked for the Merry Men. It's sad that in just 7 miserable seasons the Men have had enough players stink up the joint to have found 12 songs that contain one of their names in them. But hey, that's the way things go in Locksley when you have a dumbass like _TPTB_ signing these bastards....

There will be no bonus points for naming the player associated with each song, since that would be a disadvantage for those not in the BBBL, though it's a free country and if you wanna try to figure out which 12 players I'm blasting here, by all means knock yourself out (You may even get a few JJC points for slamming some of these idiots who LB loves to hate).... and after all, DaveSenior did just that when I ran the original game back in '04, and I'd bet a jar full of pesos that he remembers that one....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

OMG, Please Marry Me Derek - I Want To Kill Jeter Fangirls, The one bad thing about going to BP at the stadium is having to listen to these high pitched, shrieking, banshees shouting their everlasting love to Jeter. Of course, one of my favorite stories comes from when a certain Yankee came out of the dugout and a whole section of teenage girls began shrieking ridiculously loudly which led to this exchange:

Bubba Crosby: "You do know that I'm not Jeter, right?"
Random Girl #1: "You're not??"
Bubba: "Nope."
Random Girl #2: "Well screw Jeter, you're hot, can I have YOUR number?"
Bubba: (Clearly Thrown Off) "Ummm...No thank you"
(Bubba runs away from the stands as fast as humanly possible)

And people wonder why I love baseball.

1. The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows we made
Were never to be
Blueberry Hill - Fats Domino (Dedicated to Blue Jays infielder Aaron Hill, drafted to be my third baseman for the 2006 season and completely and totally stinking the joint up to where I had released him by May....)

2. Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
but it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me
Strawberry Fields Forever - Beatles (Dedicated to White Sox third baseman Josh Fields, drafted to be my third baseman in 2008 after a breakout second half of the 2007 season, and not even being able to make the team over Jeemie's fave Joe Crede....)

3. Every man deserves a good woman
and I want you to be my wife.
Time is so much better spent with you baby
a woman just like you in my life.
Casanova - Levert (Dedicated to Raul Casanova, brought on to be my catcher on the inaugural Merry Men team in 2002 and lasting about 2 weeks....)

4. We got the rhythm
We've got the music on our side
If we go with 'em
I'll bet we'll have a wonderful ride
Dancing in the Sheets - Shalamar (Dedicated to Ben Sheets, #1 draft pick for the Merry Men in 2006, and we kept him in 2007 as well. I think he spent about 10 weeks that entire time NOT on the DL....)

5. Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder
Do my tears of mourning sink beneath the sun
She's got herself a universe gone quickly
For the call of thunder threatens everyone
Ray of Light - Madonna (Dedicated to Orioles closer Chris Ray, the only legit closer I drafted in 2007, who got lit up like a Christmas tree by A-Roid early in that season and was never the same. In fact, he spent the entire second half on the DL and I'm not sure if he's pitched much since....)

6. Your heart is down for the count and you know you're gonna lose it
Tonight you're gonna go down in flames
Just Like Jesse James - Cher (Dedicated to Braves starter Chuck James, who was literally the only starting pitcher to do any good for me at all in 2006 when I picked him up before he made his first start that June. That means I wound up drafting him again in 2007 and yet again in 2008.... the former year he stunk and the latter year he spent a good deal of time at AAA because he still stunk....)

7. I'm gonna run, I'm gonna try
I'm gonna take this love
Right to ya
All my heart, all the joy
Oh baby, baby please
Rush Rush - Paula Abdul (Dedicated to pitcher Glendon Rusch, who provided my first 2 starting staffs in 2002-03 with plenty of dud games... like the time he gave up 4 homers to Shawn Green the same day I drove all the way to Kansas City just to find out the game against the Rangers that day got rained out....)

8. Though the dawn may be coming soon
There still may be some time
Fly me away to the bright side of the moon
And meet me on the other side
Dream Weaver - Gary Wright (Dedicated to the Brotehrs Weaver. Jeff is a Merry Man legend, having spent all of 2002, 04, and 05 on my team. I have to cut him some slack since he did kick ass for me in '05, and that performance still stands as the best ever by one of my starting pitchers. But his brother Jered burned me good last season just to make up for it....)

9. You know I don't understand why you don't treat yourself better,
Do the crazy things that you do.
When all the debutantes in Houston, baby,
Couldn't hold a candle to you.
The Long Run - Eagles (Dedicated to Terrence Long, who proved when I drafted him in 2002 that the success he had in 2000-01 was just as much of a fluke as his Leap Day birthday....)

10. I scream you scream
We all scream for her
Don't even try 'cause
You can't ignore her
Cherry Pie - Warrant (Dedicated to Felix Pie, who I thought was an excellent pickup midway through the 2007 season when my outfield was falling apart. He was, for one week....)

11. Take a look
To the sky
Just before you die
It's the last time he will
For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica (Dedicated to David Bell, one of the many, many, many Phillies hitters whom I made the mistake of drafting over the years, in this came, 2003. It's too bad there wasn't a song with Burrell in the title...)

12. I want to wish you a merry Christmas
I want to wish you a merry Christmas
I want to wish you a merry Christmas
From the bottom of my heart
Feliz Navidad - Jose Feliciano (Dedicated to Pedro Feliz, whom I acquired midway through the 2005 season from Flock for closer Todd Jones. It's a shame my outstanding starting staff from '05 had to put up with the absolute worst offense I've ever assembled. Feliz was supposed to bolster that, and he didn't....)

JJC Points:

TLITF gets a JJC point for his Darryl Strawberry anecdote...

Melo gets a JJC point for thinking of A-Roid on the Madonna song...

silvercamaro gets 3 JJC points for answering Rafael Palmeiro to every song. The closest I ever came to the BBBL championship was in 2003 when I finsihed second to Moonie (See the ES pic), and that only happened because of a strong second half push by my team in which Palmeiro, who I acquired in July from BeeMan for soon-to-be-demoted-and-traded- "closer" Mike "Kerosene" Williams, went on a tear. Thank you Palmeiro for everything you have done for the Merry Men, even if it came by means of injections from Pet Meds....

Mini gets a half-assed JJC point for her effort in this game... :P

ghost made me laugh with Bright Side of the Moon, so she gets a JJC point....

TBone had some good baseball answers and gets 3 JJC points....

Fanny made a push for some JJC's and got them. I'm giving her 3 whether or not people think it's because of some crush or something...

Clem gets the Supermax minus one for his humorous baseball answers. The reason I am docking a point is because Rickey Henderson would never, ever, ever refer to himself in the first person as in Clem's answer....

Estonut gets the full Supermax though for flat out making me bust a gut. Nicely done!

Pea gets a JJC point because I don't know what creeps me out more.... 6th graders slow dancing or anyone of any age trying to dance to Strawberry Fields.....

Because he's George Brett? I couldn't stand that guy, he was like the Brett Favre of 70s-80s baseball. And, ha, I just realized the Brett thing, maybe that explains it. No, Brett Hull was very cool and practically perfect in every way, not just thought he was.
I'm Am The Most Awesomest Bestest Superest Athete Of All Time - Rickey Henderson, One of the few people in the world whose ego exceeds my own..
Don't you mean 'Rickey is the Most Awesomest Bestest Superest Athlete of All Time"? I wonder if Rickey Henderson knows Joe Horn.....

Crap, I was trying to highlight the Jeter thing to quote it and I accidentally erased it, so I'll just say that was really funny. Wow, you gave a baseball anecdote that I enjoyed, that's not easy to do!
Also in case you were wondering Fanny, Mexican Radio was featured on that RoL Charm School episode where they had to put bands together and that lead singer had some SERIOUS camel toe going on...
Actually, I was wondering. Of the two songs you got, I couldn't remember either of them being in any of 'our' shows. Now that you mention it, I'm vaguely remembering hearing Mexican Radio, though. But I didn't really watch that episode very intently. Cameltoe, cameltoe, cameltoe, cameltoe, cameltoe.....

Damn, I was all ready to complain that none of these players were any that I had ever heard of so it was an unfair disadvantage. Blah, blah, blah..... But I've actually heard of this dude! He's a pitcher for the Rockies, right?

I think the only reason I knew Rusch even played for the Rockies last year is because, in a moment of weakness, I picked him up for a few games in August. He should have been out of baseball years ago....

Dammit, that's a rookie mistake right there. I'm embarrassed.

BTW, I am not very surprised that you can't win the league seeing as, judging by these picks, you are the crappiest drafter I have ever seen...
