Idol Stuff
Top 36? Is this something new or is memory failing? I thought, in the past, they went to Top 24 after Chairs. I hope Tatiana does not make it. Good voice but way too much drama. Funny thing, though. I didn't remember too many faces in the group that was sent home.

Re: Idol Stuff
Random observations:
Looks like they have alot of talent this year. And alot of pretty faces.
Why is it when the girls sing, they always tap the microphone with their hand? That 'tap' has been going on for years now, but I've never seen anyone do it outside of "Idol".
Also, the guy who has the alter-ego of "Norman Gentle" is hilarious! Im sort of rooting for him to keep on going, just for the comedy value. (although that ultimately means he's taking up someone else's space).
Overall, should be a good year for us Idol Fans

The 36 is newish. TBone explained it in another thread, and you can read about it on their website. They will also have some wild cards again this season.
As for your final statement, they did not waste screen time earlier on people they knew were not going to make it.

I didn't follow it well enough.
Did Tatiana get moved from the 'no' room to the 'yes' room and from a 'yes' room to another 'yes' room?

Carrie Underwood STILL does it. She was doing it on the Grammys Sunday. Drives me absolute batshit. I think today's young singers got that from Mariah Carey, along with the fluttery hand and "testifying raised hand". Oh, and let's not forget the overbaked vocal gymnastics.moonie wrote:Random observations:

I finally figured it out. George W. Bush was not responsible for the country's ills...it's Mariah Carey!

Re: Idol Stuff
I missed a bit of it, but I'm pretty sure there was a "yes" to "yes" move at the end. They were messing with her, which is good. She is still in it, which is not.peacock2121 wrote:I didn't follow it well enough.

Can't stand Tatiana. Everytime she's on, I'm talking to the television: "Shut up! Please, just shut up!" I can't see HOW America is going to vote her in. Only 2 factors worry me about that:
1) If the Vote For the Worst" crew REALLY mobilizes behind her
2) The JUDGES put her in the Top 12, as she is "good tv".
What happened to "forget the lyrics, you're out"? They forgot to add "unless you're one of our judges' pets, then you can fall asleep in the middle of the song and we'll put you through". Joanna Pacitti was absolutely putrid last night, yet she gets a free pass. I am disliking her as much as tatiana, but for different reasons. I've already listed all of the chances she has had in the industry, but her ties to this show are a BIG BIG conflict of interest. And her getting through after that fiasco last night doesn't help change the odor of a fix being in at all. She needs to go. NOW.
Drama Boy Nick also annoys me to no end. I wouldn't mind half as much if he were really good, but he is really average. Not worth the drama.
"Norman" is amusing but it wearing thin. He's not THAT funny. If he is not going to take it seriously at some point, how can we?
Too many "good television" contestants, not enough talent. I hope that changes. Soon. At this point I only need a couple more pushes and I will find something else to do on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Right now, the Vote For the Worst site is going crazy, as they have a plethora of candidates so far this year. SO many that they don't know who to back. Maybe that's Idol's intention?

IIRC, the tapping movement (BP in honor of Frogman's birthday) may have started with Whitney. It annoys the crap outta me as well. But let's still blame Mariah for the other.T_Bone0806 wrote:Carrie Underwood STILL does it. She was doing it on the Grammys Sunday. Drives me absolute batshit. I truly wish they'd just 86 the whole America Votes ridiculousness altogether. It's all a bunch of crap - proven when Nikki McKibbin and Diana DeGarmo stayed way too long, and Jennifer Hudson and LaToya London left way too soon. The judges are just sitting there anyway. Why not simply continue utilizing their judgement?! Harumphf.

Then it wouldn't be American Idol. It would be Simon/Paula/Lara/Randy Idol.Second Chance wrote:I truly wish they'd just 86 the whole America Votes ridiculousness altogether. Simon gave us Carmen Rasmussen, and I haven't forgiven him yet. {{{{SHUDDER}}}}
You'll get voting blocs that carry a contestant beyond their level of talent every year, like the rumored Mormon Bloc that kept Carmen around and Jasmine getting the entire Hawaiian time zone to herself. In the end, it all kind of evens out.
I think limiting votes per phone number might be okay, but more than the 5 they give for Dancing With the Alleged Stars, since we have more than that in our house.

Re: Idol Stuff
There was just an article about a local kid Markese Morris. He's a basketball player at Burlington City HS in NJ.
He made it to Hollywood. So did a Brianna something, another local.
There was all this local kerfluffle when Joanna Pacitti was chosen to play Annie for something -- Annie Warbucks, maybe? -- because she was Mayfair, a section of Northeast Philadelphia.
Although, less kerfluffle, IIRC, than Andrea McCardle (original B'way Annie), also from NE Philadelphia, and Aileen Quinn (movie Annie, who was from suburbs right over NE Philadelphia border).
I usually start paying attention when they are down to maybe eight or 10.
Although if the engaging Markese Morris is on it, I may pay attention earlier.

Oh, and what a drag that they let go of the 16-yr old "homeless" girl who sang her own song during auditions, Lanisha (?) Young... She sounded terrific in Hollywood. WTF?

Re: Idol Stuff
I didn't pick up Season 3 of Idol until they were down to 4 singers. At that point, I thought she should win. Wasn't impressed with LaToya at all, and can't stand Fantasia. Maybe DeGarmo should never have made it that far, but once she did, she should have won.Second Chance wrote:I truly wish they'd just 86 the whole America Votes ridiculousness altogether. I often think of funny things to post. Many times, I choose not to because I worry that the tone won't come across as I mean it. I never want to offend someone unintentionally. So, I pass up some chances to show my sense of humor.peacock2121 wrote:I knew you were kidding.TheCalvinator24 wrote:And, just in case it wasn't obvious, I'm not really hurt.peacock2121 wrote: Sometimes I am just slow.

I do it when I have to hold the mic. It's not really a conscious thing. I don't like holding the mic when I sing but when I have to and there is no mic stand, I tap it. When there is a mic stand I tap my leg or tap my food. I think it really has to do with keeping up the beat.moonie wrote:Random observations:

Now that I think about it, I might try to stop as it could be annoying to peeps watching.

I must not be very observant. I have never noticed the mic tapping by any Idol contestant.Tocqueville3 wrote:I do it when I have to hold the mic. It's not really a conscious thing.
