Isreali elections tomorrow

#1 Post by danielh41 » Mon Feb 09, 2009 1:41 pm

I don't know much about their election process nor about the candidates running, but given the state of Iran's nuclear program and Ahmadinejad's stated intention of wiping Isreal off the map, this seems like a monumentally important election for them. And although I don't know much about most of the candidates, I have seen filmed interviews with Benjamin Netanyahu, and I was very impressed with his views on the world.

Whatever the outcome, I hope and pray that they get the right leader.

My understanding of Israeli politics:

-Parliamentary system, with two more-or-less evenly matched major parties.

-Balance of power therefore held by one or more of the minority parties, which are usually the most extreme and/or ultrareligious groups; some statements in their political platforms make apartheid look tame.

-Israeli people in general, after 60 years of existing under constant military threat, are tired of war.

-Small and not so small factions in every surrounding country are not so tired of war and do not want Israel to exist at all.

-Who wins is nearly irrelevant as long as the statement immediately above this one remains true; the winner will do whatever it takes to defend the country, up to and including using its purported nuclear capability.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.
