RIP Clint Ritchie and (maybe?) Phil Carey too

I guess I missed news of Clint Ritchie's (formerly Clint Buchanan on One Life to Live) passing last Saturday. But I don't see it posted here yet. Blood clot to the brain following pacemaker surgery.

And I just found two unconfirmed reports that Clint's TV dad, Phil Carey (Asa Buchanan) has also passed away! He played Archie Bunker's friend Steve, the big macho football player -- the big macho gay football player -- in the episode "Judging Books By Covers."

RIP, gentlemen.

OMG!! I remember when the Buchanan's came galloping into Llanview. How sad. I just referenced "Donna Beck" in the BCT post----IRL, Clint Richie and Candice Earley dated for many years. Even though they have already acknowledged "Asa" 's death, and Jerry Van Dorn is now playing "Clint", I would be surprised if OLTL didn't acknowledge their passings in some way.

ETA: Yeah, they know. Wiki has listed his death, but IMDB and DorA still have him as alive. Apparently it just happened yesterday or today.

Wow. I know they recently showed a video tape of "Asa", as it pertained to the "David Vickers" (whom I love) story, but I was only half paying attention. From what I hear, Phil Carey had wanted to quit OLTL for the past few years, but stayed on... I really hope they honor him in some way.

Mrs. SSS and I watch OLTL every day and I just told her. Phil Carey had lung cancer and was over 80 so it wouldn't be a surprise. However, as of now, this story seems to have originated only from a radio interview with Erin Torpey, a former actress on the show, who when commenting about Clint Ritchie's death, mentioned that Carey had also died. No other source has confirmed it.

Carey was active in films in the 1950's (he was the second male lead in Calamity Jane) and on TV in the 60s and 70s before taking the role of Asa. One bit of trivia is that Carey played the first admittedly gay character on network TV when he guest starred on an episode of All in the Family as an old high school pal of Archie's and a former football player. Archie had been making fun of a friend of Meathead's (played by another future soap opera icon Anthony Geary) who seemed effeminate and was shocked when Carey's character then admitted to him that he was gay.

The AP has just posted an obituary notice on Phil Carey.

I haven't followed OLTL in years, but sometimes it's on in the waiting room while I'm working and I can't help but catch a bit of it. As many times as Asa's been back from the dead over the years, I guess this is it

Sadly, two other beloved stars of One Life to Live passed away recently: Patricia Elliott, who played Asa's wife Renée, and Nathaniel Marston, who played Al Holden.

The way that the cast members of One Life to Live and All My Children were yanked around by Prospect Park, the company that briefly put them back online is a real shame. If their cancellation happened today, I think platforms like Hulu would be much more likely to pick them up (Hulu hosted their web episodes but wasn't involved in the production).

ABC also had a role in this screw-up. When Prospect Park delayed restarting One Life to Live, General Hospital hired a few of its actors, and they played their One Life to Live roles. After Prospect Park objected, General Hospital kept the actors but gave them new roles. Astoundingly, actors on General Hospital have frequently played multiple characters. Sometimes they're cousins or evil twins, but other times they're not related, and the other characters never notice.

One thing I remember when walking around the building that filmed WWTBAM when we were there in 2000 was some forklifts unloading some crates across the street (where they filmed OLTL), prominently labeled "ASA'S BEDROOM." We figured they were bringing them in for some upcoming episodes.

If you want a soap opera where actors played multiple characters, nothing beats the original Dark Shadows. I think the most by one actor was Thayer David, who played eleven (!!) different characters during the 5-year run of the series. Of course, when you go popping into four non-present-day time frames and multiple alternative dimensions, that kind of becomes necessary.
