because of unpaid hydro bills.
He left his fortune to a local hospital estimated at just over $600,000.

I disremember, but was he in an apartment or a house? If the latter, the vast majority of that estate was probably the house itself. You can be house rich but cash poor, just like the companies that go bankrupt because of poor cash flow.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Not the house, he lived in Bay City MI in a 1200sf one story house that looks like he moved in when he got back from WWII. You probably could get 30 for 600K

I don't remember this specifically, but I remember a similar case where the cat's mattress was stuffed full of money and stock certificates (or bonds, I can't remember).

Sort of like Hetty Green, except everybody knew she had money.
Push it real good!

I'm guessing "hydro bill" is an Canadianism. I'm pretty sure it is not used in Bay City, MI.

In the news coverage about Mr. Schur's death, one of relatives said they were worried that he was confused about things and that may have led to him not paying the bill. One report said his bills were found on a table with cash clipped to each one but they had not been mailed out.

The Bay City Times says his house was valued at less than $45,000.

It's just a sad, sad story.
