Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/30/09

by Jefferson Starplane
Hello, it's everyone's favorite LS group Jefferson Starplane here to host today's Free For All Friday game! Did you notice that only one of our fine songs was used so far this month, and it came from an old game from 4 years ago? Well, you certainly didn't think we were gonna let that go on much longer now, did you? We wouldn't want KT to get upset at the lack of Starplane in this year's game! In fact, we decided to honor our favorite fan by steal.... er, borrowing the excellent concept he came up with in his most recent LS contest, and have dedicated the first half of this game to all songs we did as either Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, or just plain Starship. You don't need to know which name we released these songs under, just their titles. And if a set of lyrics contains any blanks, you get a bonus point if you can fill in those blanks in the lyrics! The number of blanks will tell you how many words you have to fill in....

We have another special guest lined up for the bottom half of this game that I know someone will love as well!

1 point for the title, and 1 point if you can correctly fill in the blanks in the lyrics where applicable....

1. If only you believe like I believe, baby, like I believe,
_____ ______ ______

2. Like a cat and a mouse (cat and a mouse)
From door to door and-a house to house
Don't you pretend you don't know
What I'm talking about

3. Tears are running down and down and down your breast
And your friends, baby they treat you like a guest

4. I sure ain't got no home
I seem to find love where I ramble
And when it's time to go
I hear that voice again, saying

5. Precious love
I'll give it to you
Blue as the sky and deep in the
Eyes of a love so true

6. Let 'em say we're crazy, I don't care about that
Put your hand in my hand, baby, don't ever look back
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby, we can make it ____ _____ _____ _____ ______

7. No intentions
Whatsoever
I was gone for a night
Nothing's forever

8. One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, _____ _____ _____ _____ _____

9. Should I know your name
Did we meet some time ago
I feel uncertain
Shadows whisper to me now
Sudden wind begins to blow

10. Someone's always playing corporation games
Who cares they're always changing corporation names
We just want to dance here, someone stole the stage
They call us irresponsible, ____ _____ _____ _____ _____

And now for the second half of today's game, brought to you by TLITF's favorite musician of all-time.... Mr. William Joel! All of the following songs were done by Billy Joel at some point in his long and illustrious career. The same rules and scoring apply here as for the Starplane section above....

11. Some love is just a lie of the soul
A constant battle for the ultimate state of control
After you've heard lie upon lie
There can hardly be a question of why

12. You went uptown riding in your limousine
In your fine Park Avenue clothes
You had the Dom Perignon in your hand
And the _____ _____ _____ _____

13. I can always find someone
to say they sympathize.
If I wear my heart out on my sleeve.

14. You've heard my latest record spin on the radio
It took me years to write it, they were the best years of my life
It was a beautiful song but it ran too long
If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit
So they ____ _____ _____ _____ _____

15. Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie

16. Time goes by and you're sharing an apartment
She says she loves you but she doesn't know why
In the morning she leaves you with your coffee and your paper
It's a strange situation for an old fashioned guy

17. Out in ______ they're killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line

18. Just like a boxer in a title fight
You got to walk in that ring all alone
You're not the only one who's made mistakes
But they're the only thing that you can truly call your own

19. Call me a joker, call me a fool
Right at this moment I'm totally cool
Clear as a crystal, sharp as a knife
I feel like I'm in the prime of my life

20. Listen boy
It's not automatically a certain guarantee
To insure yourself
You've got to provide _____ ______

Bonus (2 points): The music video for the song in #20 starts off by stating that it took place on July 31, 1963. Why is that not possible?

Dammit, you know I only know three Starplane songs!

_____ ______ ______

In Miracles - We'd get by (wow I know FOUR of their songs! I learned something today, I had no idea they did this.)

2. Like a cat and a mouse (cat and a mouse)
From door to door and-a house to house
Don't you pretend you don't know
What I'm talking about

3. Tears are running down and down and down your breast
And your friends, baby they treat you like a guest

Somebody to Love

4. I sure ain't got no home
I seem to find love where I ramble
And when it's time to go
I hear that voice again, saying

5. Precious love
I'll give it to you

Eyes of a love so true

6. Let 'em say we're crazy, I don't care about that
Put your hand in my hand, baby, don't ever look back
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby, we can make it ____ _____ _____ _____ ______

I thought the title was Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, but those are the missing lyrics, so maybe it's just called The Theme from Mannequin?

7. No intentions

I was gone for a night
Nothing's forever

8. One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all

We Built This City - Write us off the page

At least you used all the ones I know......ha!

Tell Her About It - (something) constantly

Bonus (2 points): The music video for the song in #20 starts off by stating that it took place on July 31, 1963. Why is that not possible?

Because they don't have court on that day? Because they don't have high school reunions in the summer? Ha!

He was on a variety show in the video (I think Sullivan, but it could have been Allen or Paar), so I'm going with that day was not the day of the week that particular show aired.

I never would have thought that I'd do better on Starplane than Billy Joel. Then again, I only had one Joel album (you have something against the Stranger?), so I guess I should just be happy that you used a bunch of songs from the doo wop video era of his career.

Unlike TLITF's dislike for Mr. Joel, I have no animosity per se for Starplane (other than the most recent stuff, which was just garbage). In fact, I like some of their music quite a lot. I just got tired of seeing them in EVERY F'IN' LS GAME. :-)

Bonus (2 points): The music video for the song in #20 starts off by stating that it took place on July 31, 1963. Why is that not possible?

Great. I knew there must be some deep psychological reason I'm back at work today, other than to fax that order in for someone who didn't get me the correct info 'til mid-day yesterday, at which point I had forgotten how urgent they said it was at 9:00am, & also to look up more plane trips. Apparently no planes fly nonstop from Boston to Jacksonville, FL anymore, at least not for reasonable prices.

I came back to play this game! Musta.

If I recall correctly, the video took place on "The Ed Sullivan Show". If that is so, I'm guessing that it wasn't possible because 7/31/63 was NOT a SUnday, which, as all of us old farts remember, was the night Mr. Sullivan's show was on.
By the way, I like Billy Joel a lot. Jefferson Stashipplane not so much. Especially when Balin is whining. Cannot STAND his voice.

Wait a minute! Billy Joel! I Know Billy Joel cold! Almost as well as I know Barry Manilow! Yes! Thanks Mom, thanks for the Piano Mans, the Ballads of Billy the Kid and the Going To Extremes! Joel truly reminds me of my childhood. Of course unlike most people's childhood's this does not evoke happiness. Instead it makes me violent so even if I know the answers there make be viciousness within. Beware!

Honesty - My mom had The Stranger which had much better songs but for some reason she told me people preferred this one. I never got that. It's another one of those whiny songs....whatever...more proof that old people are stoopid...LB is old...

CUT IT DOWN TO 3:05! Lord, it feels good to know these answers....This was a reference to the Piano Man I think...and the best part about this song is that Joel was genuinely pissed off that he was just The Entertainer...anyway the genuine anger behind this one made it one of my favorites. It wasn't Captain Jack good, but it was close...
15. Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie
Spoiler
Innocent Man - Another genuinely good song but it was badly upstaged in my book because I always wanted to switch later in the album to Uptown Girl. This was before I hit puberty of course. LB probably still switches ahead to Uptown Girl....

So all in all, this was a good day. But you left out Captain Jack. How could you leave out Captain Jack?! Everybody loves Captain Jack! He'll get you high tonight!!!!! DAMMIT LB! HOW COULD YOU DISGRACE CAPTAIN JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That song had such great undertones of drug abuse! Plus, it provided endless humor when Hillary Clinton played it during her Senate campaign and Rudy Giuliani decided to read the lyrics at A press conference! Just imagine old Rudy being replayed on the nightly news just monotoning: "Captain Jack will get you high tonight and take you to his special island" and of course the classic line "You just sit at home and masturbate" followed by Rudy looking up and slowly, sadly shaking his head. AND YOU DIDN'T INCLUDE THIS SONG! I hope you are properly ashamed of yourself and I hope that someone puts that clip up on Youtube.....

I think it's some kind of a local crime for people who grew up in New York not to know Billy Joel inside and out. However, Billy apparently did not play well here locally. St. Louis is known for giving bands like Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, and even Sammy Haggar (Who still considers STL to be his second home) lots of airplay before they ever became big, but from anectdotal evidence I've heard from local deejays who were around at the time, largely ignored Mr. Joel until the MTV era... and even then it was scattershot (I honestly don't think I've ever heard the song "Pressure" played on the radio... only off of a video channel). I was once chided by KT when there was a question about the song "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" on PTBAM back in the day, and I admitted I had never heard of the song despite the fact that I listened to a station that played all 70's music for most of the last half of the 90's...

To make a long story short, there is a lot of BJ that I hear people rave about all the time that I can't say I've ever heard in my life. Captain Jack is one of them....

Well, at least I've heard of both of those songs (and they're both played regularly on the radio here), and I've probably even used them both in past games....

I had to make sure I worked a few of my faves in there though since I only had 10 songs to work with, so I couldn't satisfy everyone (or even anyone!)....

I love An Innocent Man album and the videos for Tell Her About It and Uptown Girl.

IIRC, this was set on The Ed Sullivan Show. So, I am guessing that July 31, 1963, wasn't a Sunday.

Two possibilities: I don't think that 7/31/63 was a Sunday...by my count, it would have been a Wednesday, and Ed Sullivan was on on Sunday nights, I think...the other is the Cosmonaut and newspaper headline about a Russian in orbit...didn't Gagarin do that in '61??

Without thinking, I Googled to see what day of the week 7/31/63 was. Being a Wednesday, it did not coincide with the schedule of the Ed Sullivan Show. I don't know if Googling the date disqualifies me or not.
