An Abert's squirrel stands in fairly fresh snow hoping that the hiker in his field of view has some food. I didn't, and he went back to foraging after I passed. Even this squirrel was smart enough to avoid the campground that evening, when the temperature plunged to 4 degrees and more snow fell. That night was an inauspicious beginning to my December trip to New Mexico and Arizona.

The Abert Squirrel in the snow is a great photo! It's the best character shot I've seen of this spiffily-dressed little beast, and allowed my mother to see our winter visitor. Lake City, CO, is home to many Aberts.
