My church is sponsoring a week-long, probably break-neck, tour of Scotland end of Arpil/beiginning May. I'm going.
It's a Wednesday-Wednesday tour, so The Bride and I are leaving the weekend before, to visit my cousins in Northern Ireland, and then take two days in Dublin.
I've never been to Scotland, and only passed through the Shannon Airport in the Republic of Ireland. A mite embarrassing- I'm a citizen of Ireland, and have spent a total of 4 hours there.
Any suggestions for eat, drink or activity, particularly in Dublin?

In Dublin, Temple Bar is a must. To up your Irish citizenship cred with a little history, I recommend checking out the Book of Kells on display at the university. It's right in town anyway, and no admission fees.

My best times in Dublin have been just wandering into random old pubs and talking to the locals. For some reason, I have always seen native Dubliners drinking cheap American beer. Bizarre. I mean, I won't drink that swill at home. The Guinness Brewery tour is quite interesting, and the bar at the top is all windows and offers really great views of the city.
I really, really love Belfast. Will you be there at all? A black taxi tour capped off by drinks at the Crown pub would be at the top of my rec list. There's another pub that I have frequented, known in the past(?) for its IRA connections. It's definitely a local place. Some real characters there, for sure, and always a good time.
Edinburgh, though, is where its at. Incredible city imo. I thought about moving there once upon a time! There's a weight to that city that just floors me every time...the gothic feel of it all, and the architecture. The history doesn't feel that old, if that makes sense.
Enjoy the trip!

I agree with what mmff said. I lived in Ireland a while back. Grafton Street has been turned into a pedestrian mall and there are some nice stores such as Brown Thomas and Mark & Spencers. Bewleys is a tourist stop but they have a very nice high tea. One end of Grafton is Trinity College (Book of Kells) and at the other end is Saint Stephen's Green. There are some nice Georgian houses in the area. Temple Bar, the Ha'penny and O'Connell Street are within walking distance of each other.
Are you interested in James Joyce?
