We had gazillions of police & fire trucks last week, pulled up along the building next door, with absolutely no explanation.

And by now I know better than to ask the gazillions. Strangely enough, I heard no alarms, & no one in my building mentioned it.

I found out on the nightly news that a building further back, which you can't pull the gazillions right up to, had an anthrax scare. Just a scare. Turned out not to be anthrax. But still.

(Was a threatening letter opened, in that parallel-universe university that occupies RichU's space, by Alan Dershowitz's secretary XXXX administrator-or-whatever.)

Monday there was a small fire in an attached building. Seems the biggest problem was stopping the sprinkler water flow.

Nothing reported yet today.

We were told we could go back or go home.

My day started with a 6 am conference call. That and since oblut 15% of the building actually showed up today, I am now home.

I have another call at 4 but I can work on email in the mean time.

Well, and say hi here!

An employer tells me I can go back into a building that they saw the need to evacuate or I can go home - I'm going home.

If they don't take a stand that it is safe to go back in, neither will I.

PeaBabe,

Don't even think for a second they would take safety lightly. VERY much taken seriously.

But because we do work with chemicals, there are many levels of safety systems, and like any complex system, it has many parts that can fail.

Maybe not to the level of airline pilots and flight attendants, but we have drills and plans and after event analysis.

Everyone must be accounted for (system in place). We get timed in how fast we evacuate and if anyone is missing.

And they would never let anyone back in until they determined the problem and made sure it was okay.

Things can happen anywhere, but people working on a daily business with chemicals are usually well trained and careful.

And I am a very good bartender as I rarely spill things. Chemists are usually very good at NOT spilling things!

Thanks for the education.

I was mad at them on your behalf and now I am not.
