Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/26/09

While I have run four Lyrically Speaking contests by myself in the past, and have pulled one game from each of the first three already for Retro Monday, lost in the dustbin of Bored history is the November 2003 LS, which I believe was run by Ritterskoop, who allowed a different BB to host each week that month. I took the second week, a week which is still quite memorable to me for the fact that my suspected kidney stone problems became definite kidney stone problems, as I wound up missing 2 days of work that week and finally was referred by my local quack to a urologist. Then there was Marley's card, which came on Wacky Wednesday of that week, and was ironically foreshadowed in the Wierd Al song I was supposed to post that coming Friday... but I wound up posting it on Monday instead after Marley complained about not knowing any of my LS songs. It would've lost it's significance had it been posted when it was supposed to! Of course, Marley is still "The One _TPTB_ Doesn't Want", but I always thought that was one of the neatest coincidences on teh Bored that I've been involved in, and it wouldn't have happened without this 5 day LS run...

Well, anyway, today's Retro Monday game comes from that one week stint I did that November. I chose the game I ran for Theme Thursday that week, which has a simple, but 2 part theme to it (As in, there are 2 things each of these songs have in common), and you must give both parts to get theme credit...

Today's Retro Monday game was originally posted on Thursday November 13, 2003, the same day I first got my Rock of Gibralter X-rayed....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for the theme....

1. Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man a man
Black as the dark night she was
Got what no-one else had

2. When you looked at me I should've run
But I thought it was just for fun
I see I was wrong
And I'm not so strong
I should've known all along that time would tell

3. So cool, she was like jazz on a summer's day
Music, high and sweet, then she just blew away
Now she can't be that warm with the wind in her arms

4. Well, if you want to be a movie star
I`ll get a ticket to Hollywood
But if you want to stay
Just the way you are
You know I think you really should

5. When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for

6. one time a thing occured to me
what's real, and what's for sale?
blew a kiss and tried to take it home

7. Now I understand
What you tried to say, to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

8. Well it was all of sixty-five years ago
When the world was the street where she lived
And a young man sailed on a ship in the sea
With a picture of

9. Sitting on a pebble
By the river playing guitar
Wondering if we`re really
Ever gonna get that far

Title: Lyrically Speaking - 1/26/09

Artist: Rembrandt (I don't think Evil Squirrel had yet been born in 2003.)

Theme, in two parts: Songs I didn't know in November 2003 and still don't recognize in Janurary 2009.

All my answers are correct. I will anticipate maximum points.

Can you say
..."vague"...?

Which, ironically, fits this theme! :P

1. Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man a man
Black as the dark night she was
Got what no-one else had

Venus, Shocking Blue AND Bananarama (I just like saying Bananarama. Sorry.)

2. When you looked at me I should've run
But I thought it was just for fun
I see I was wrong
And I'm not so strong
I should've known all along that time would tell

Vacation, the Go-Go's

3. So cool, she was like jazz on a summer's day
Music, high and sweet, then she just blew away
Now she can't be that warm with the wind in her arms

Ack! Familiar!

4. Well, if you want to be a movie star
I`ll get a ticket to Hollywood
But if you want to stay
Just the way you are
You know I think you really should

Vehicle by somebody and remade by somebody else and I'll be damned if I can remember either one...

5. When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for

Vogue, Madonna

6. one time a thing occured to me
what's real, and what's for sale?
blew a kiss and tried to take it home

Familiarish

7. Now I understand
What you tried to say, to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

Vincent, Don Maclean

8. Well it was all of sixty-five years ago
When the world was the street where she lived
And a young man sailed on a ship in the sea
With a picture of

Veronica, Elvis Costello (This may be the song of his I like the least. But I had a friend named Veronica when this came out. Only she went by Roni and everyone pronounced it like Rice-a-Roni. She should have doubled the 'n' or something...)

9. Sitting on a pebble
By the river playing guitar
Wondering if we`re really
Ever gonna get that far

Okay, I bet I got this last time. I remember being irked by the pebble and wondering just how tiny your ass has to be to sit on a pebble. What IS this?

10. You are the best,
You seem to stand out from the rest
Your intention's to be more than a honorable mention

Nope

Theme?

All the titles are a single word, and that single word begins with the letter "V". Like Vague.

Oh I get it. I finally have a day with double-digit points and you avenge this by putting up songs that were around long before I existed. Ad I don't mean existed in the sense that I was alive I mean existed in the sense that my friggin' sperm had not even come into being when these damned songs were made. And if that makes you feel old than maybe you are.

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: The following answers were written in a violent fury and there are no real attempts at humor, but rather a virulent, vicious set of responses that may not be for the faint-hearted. Please do not attempt to read the following answers if you are pregnant, have a history of lung disease or enjoy songs by James Blunt. This last is not because of any danger to you but rather the fact that if you like James Blunt you are not worthy of reading Clem's answers.

1. Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man a man
Black as the dark night she was
Got what no-one else had
Spoiler
Making every man a man huh? What, did she go over to teenage boys in the 50's and make them think "Holy crap I have a penis?!" But NO, it's a misdirect she's got "what no-one else had!" Probably produced some seriously screwed up 50's teenagers...
2. When you looked at me I should've run
But I thought it was just for fun
I see I was wrong
And I'm not so strong
I should've known all along that time would tell
Spoiler
Yeah maybe this is what the Mormon kid on the Real World will say before he's finally induced into having sex. I still disagree with you guys though..I think he'll resist...aww does wittle LB not undewstand da tevvevision weference? Well then he should but some fucking decent songs in this damned shithole of a game!!! (How's that for righteous anger? Pretty good right?)
3. So cool, she was like jazz on a summer's day
Music, high and sweet, then she just blew away
Now she can't be that warm with the wind in her arms
Spoiler
OK this relates to a school story. So my first class today was biology and I came 15 minutes late b/c the trains were screwed up. ("Let the door close in the front car. Please let the door close in the front car! GET YOUR MOTHERFUCKING ASS AWAY FROM THE MOTHERFUCKING DOOR!!!!" This was an actual dialogue. Unfortunately I was not in the front car although it did make me giggle uncontrollably...anyway back to the story) So I'm all alone at a two person lab table and everyone else is already sitting paired up. Anyway, the professor asks us to split in pairs and I'm thinking "oh crap, I'm gonna be alone" but lo and behold this cute girl comes over and tells me "You're gonna be my lab partner," just like that with no explanation as to why she left the girl she was sitting with. You guys think I make up all this egotistical overblown stuff but real life continues to validate me. So how does this relate to the song? It doesn't. See now LB, you had to read a whole load of pointless crap just like I had to read 10 songs worth of pointless crap that I don't know today. Payback's a bitch.
4. Well, if you want to be a movie star
I`ll get a ticket to Hollywood
But if you want to stay
Just the way you are
You know I think you really should
Spoiler
OK you deserve a break after that death trap of a spoiler...here's a chance to catch your breath...
5. When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for
Spoiler
It's for grinding against each other and simulating sexual movements...at least that's what it is today. It sucks but at least nowadays teens don't have to ask our parents to teach 'em to dance. It really comes quite naturally. BTW if PSM is reading this, don't worry, I'm joking, I'm sure your kids don't dance like this...it's just a joke...
6. one time a thing occured to me
what's real, and what's for sale?
blew a kiss and tried to take it home
Spoiler
You tried to take your own kiss home? Um...what are you, smoking crystal meth at a yard sale?? There should really be a wiki telling us how singers, writers or J.J. Cale came up with these fucked up lyrics..Were they high 97% of the time or was it just 95?
7. Now I understand
What you tried to say, to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
Spoiler
I suffer because I'm the only one on this bored sane enough to not have listened to theses shitty shitty songs.
8. Well it was all of sixty-five years ago

And a young man sailed on a ship in the sea

Dorian Gray! No wait, it was 1944 sooo...Mussolini! Truman! Dwight D.Fucking Eisenhower! Who gives a crap the ships probably sank anyway. Ever since I read Riders to the Sea by John Millington Synge I just get pissed off at the mention of these ships. I mean the mother knew her fucking kid was gonna die but she's like "Well I might starve, waah, I'm so pitiable." Well then you should fucking starve and keep your damn son! And the kid is such a pansy he's like "Oh OK, sure mom, I'll go on this quasi-pointless treacherous journey that has a ninety-nine percent chance of ending my life." What a girl. And I'm supposed to get all sad because he's dead and she's alone. Hell no. I'm pissed off. Which brings us full circle since today's LS pissed me off.
9. Sitting on a pebble
By the river playing guitar
Wondering if we`re really

Spoiler
Y'know the Mormon kid would probably get excommunicated just for reading these answers. If any Mormons are offended by these statements, don't blame me blame 1) The eyeliner wearing kid from the Real World and 2) The unidentified people in chat who attempted to explain the Mormon religion to me. Or you could just blame LB. Or Rexer.
10. You are the best,
You seem to stand out from the rest

I am the best. I stand out from the rest. And I shall win this LS. It kinda rhymes. I don't think I'm mathematically eliminated yet! What's my magic number??

One word titles beginning with V. (And although I don't remember an LS run by different people weekly and I don't think I was present at the time, I could swear I remember this. Maybe it's just because I probably used Vincent and Veronica at some point since they are two of my favourite songs. Ha!)

Victory - Kool & the Gang (This was very popular in early 1987, but seems to have fallen into the dustbin of music history....)

Theme? - One word titles beginning with "V" (And U2 just had to wait until the year after this game to release Vertigo, which is far and away my favorite U2 song. Their 80's stuff was just a'ight, and their 90's stuff was just flat out dreadful....)

JJC Points:

Silvercamaro got 3 JJC points for a very clever non-answer to this game!

Marley gets a JJC point for trying to be funny...

Saucy gets 2 JJC points because I am almost positive that Victory was a shutout the first time I ran this game (It's possible starfish got it, but... hey, where was he this game!?!?!?), and anyway, I thought it was funny that Saucy was the first one to know it this time around...

Clem got 5 JJC points for once again making me laugh by trying to piss me off. And I swear, if he would have pulled the letter V out of his ass instead of B in his Sesame Street theme answer, I'd have given him full credit for this game, regardless of what anyone would have thought of that....

TBone got a JJC point for his answer to #5....

Estonut gets 2 JJC points for his answer to #10....

Trying to be funny?

I wasn't actually funny?

You're giving out JJC points for effort, now, like the "participation" trophies that get handed out in youth sports leagues, because we can't give the impression that there are winners and losers?
