I just saw a news article saying that a new Miss America was crowned tonight. I had no idea. I guess I haven't been paying attention, but I saw absolutely no advance publicity about the event. It used to be must see TV for a lot of people, each September from Atlantic City.

It's a shadow of its former self, but it's still trivia, so it could be fertile ground for future WWTBAM questions, such as:
What cable network now shows the Miss America pageant?
What state produced the new Miss America?
What is the location of the pageant? (the city and/or the name of the venue)
In what month is the pageant held?
There are 52 contestants. They represent the 50 states and what other two places?
Who hosted the pageant?

Wow. I can't believe how far this thing has fallen in popularity. It was once carried on one of the 3 major networks. The next day, everyone knew the name of the winner. MA would then make the rounds of all the talk shows (at least the late night ones).
Mario Lopez as the host? Was Bubba unavailable? I wonder how many contestants that man-whore had a go at?

It's a shadow of its former self, but it's still trivia, so it could be fertile ground for future WWTBAM questions, such as:
What cable network now shows the Miss America pageant? I guess TLC, given the show they have about moving toward the crown or something.
What state produced the new Miss America? nope
What is the location of the pageant? (the city and/or the name of the venue) Vegas
In what month is the pageant held? I would think January
There are 52 contestants. They represent the 50 states and what other two places?
DC and Puerto Rico?
Who hosted the pageant? Mario Lopez did it last year, so I will guess him.

It was on TLC. They had contestants from DC and the US Virgin Islands, as well as the 50 states. Mario Lopez hosted, and I also saw that Clinton guy from What Not to Wear talking with the contestants. They had some kind of reality show as a run-up to the actual pageant. The pageant itself was in Las Vegas.
I dig trashy TV, but I quit watching after I saw Miss Virginia--I realized she had zero chance. Not particularly attractive, and she appeared to be awkward onstage. Alas.

Same here with Miss Colorado. I thought she was attractive, but she didn't have the confidence and stage presence that so many of the other women had. So I fell asleep watching DaVinci Code, darn it. At least I woke up for the last half hour.

Apparently TLC had a show all week - "Miss America, Countdown to the Crown", then you could vote somehow
(online I would guess). They had four of the top 15 that were voted by the viewers and not selected
by the judges. I was babysitting a one year old and it was his bedtime, so I essentially missed the entire
show except the last segment when they crowned the winner. I don't think I missed too much.
However, the winner does get a $50,000 scholarship, which is nice, very nice.

Katie Stam, the winner, is from Seymour, IN. That's the same hometown as John Mellencamp. Stam is the first Miss America from Indiana. There are now 21 states that have never had a winner.
She is a senior at the University of Indianapolis. UIndy is a Methodist affiliated college that used to be known as Indiana Central University.
