5th Grader thread

Because people expect me to post it!
This was another unaired episode with last year's class.
First contestant was a former Miss Nevada.
She used up her lifelines by the $100K question (leaving Cody without his chance at the podium) and walked away with that. On SyndieBAM, these days, $100K would be a remarkable achievement. Here, though...meh.
Second contestant was a graphics designer (?). Jeff Foxworthy disclosed something remarkable about their audition process, in saying that this contestant had aced the test they give and had scored in the "gifted" range in the IQ test they also give. And here I assumed that anyone scoring above some mediocre threshold was automatically disqualified from the show!
And this contestant used up his lifelines by the $50K question, leaving both Cody and Olivia without their chances. I'm sure Cody was really excited to have shown up that day!
And, incidentally, this contestant, who said he had visited 27 different countries, also had to walk away on a World Geography question: "Timbuktu is the capital of what African country?"

I don't think there is an answer to that Geography question.
Timbuktu is not the capital of any current African country. It was an important city in the historic Mali Empire but it doesn't appear to have ever been a political capital of that empire. IT was more important for trade and scholarship. It is a regional capital in the modern day country of Mali but Bamako is the national capital.

Good catch. Maybe Fox delayed the broadcast in hopes that the capital city would be moved. If so, I guess they got tired of waiting. At least this source calls it a spiritual and intellectual capital.

I may have quoted the question wrong, from memory. Maybe they only wanted to know what country it was in.
The regular transcript isn't posted on the 5th Grader message board yet.

You're right on that, they only asked what country it is in.

Given the general geo nitwitism of the country that question was million dollar level for this show. Just checked the Tivo and it was as noted elsewhere not indicating that it was the capital but rather just a city in what African country. The cast member guessed Kenya.
Indeed Kenya appears to be the only country in Africa the the average American geo nitwit is familiar with. During her run earlier in the show Miss Nevada was sure that Casablanca was also in Kenya.
Perhaps this further erosion of nationwide geo nitwitism that has resulted in Kenya being the only known country in Africa can be chalked up to the Obama effect...

When did Chicago become a state? Are there 51 now? Will that affect SSS's answer?

Why do I still watch?
On the 1/25 episode (Yes, I'll find it even when Fox moves it around) the Q wanted to know the river that runs through London.
(approximate quotes)
Jeff: Have you ever been to London?
Player: No
Player: I saw a movie about London.
Jeff: What movie was that?
(Get a guess in your head)
Player:
Spice World
60 Minutes has better ratings, but this was more entertaining.

I have it recorded but haven't watched it yet, so I can't answer.

The production number was AYS-241, which means it would have been last year's class.
It's still on my DVR. PM me your details if you'd like me to send you a copy.

Thanks for the offer, but I can catch the episode on Hulu.

I watched 5th Grader last night (there wasn't anything else good on).
Marley didn't miss much. They had last year's kids again.
Both contestants went out on questions relating to the human body. The first one missed "Ascorbic acid is what vitamin? A B or C? Everyone got this one wrong.
The second guy missed "what organ in the body produces insulin?" He said "liver". His classmate, Olivia said "kidney." The right answer, which I was yelling at the TV, is "pancreas."
