Not finding any clear evidence of an accepted alternate spelling, the battle from the Viet Nam war referenced in the inaugural address is:

Khe Sanh, not Khe Sahn.

The only reference I have on this is from the first album of a once-popular Australian band named "Cold Chisel". Their excellent song is titled "Khe Sahn."

Does Vietnamese translate precisely into our alphabet, or is this a phonetic thing?

Oops! I looked up my album on AllMusic.COM and didn't notice inconsistent spellings until after I posted my response. I dug up the actual album and found it is titled "Khe Sanh."

Did anyone notice that he said 44 men had taken the Presidential oath, the correct statement is 43 men had taken the oath.

FOX News was dissecting the inaugural speech and basically said that Obama shouldn't have invoked the Founders because they disagreed with his views on almost everything. They had quotes from Madison and Jefferson about the "proper role of government", contrasting their statements with those from Obama's speech.

I'd expect Fox to do that. Madison and Jefferson also owned slaves.

And the oath has been taken/given 53 times.

I think he should be praised for improvement, as this was far closer than his guesstimate during the campaign about the number of states he had visited.

Say, Annie, have you given any thought to doing a movie after your opera is completed? Home School High School Musical has a nice ring to it and the Disney people might be willing to fund it.

Vietnamese uses a Roman-style alphabet,due to the influence of the French. There are a bunch of a accents and a bar which can go through the "D". Or so my reading tells me. Rendering in English has usually been accompanied by forgetting the accents, the bar in the D, and shoving together parts of place names, it seems. ( Ha Noi to Hanoi). Of course, since English itself is quite happy with single consonants representing a bewildering variety of sounds, leaving out the internal clues in Vietnamese words rendered in English, is quite englishy.

I also read that non-native speakers of Vietnamese never wind up sounding anything like a native speaker, more so than almost any other language.

The end of word sound repesented as "nh" is there in Tranh, Minh, Dinh, and so on.

HOWEVER, a piece of information which is possibly important comes from diving down into the LP bin (not binh) and finding the original lyric sheet from Born in the USA, where indeed,the spelling is...

Khe Sahn.

And then rhymed with Viet Cong, all gone, and Saigon.
