Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was in critical condition Monday after he was shot during what police are investigating as a possible armed robbery at his home.

I read that somebody broke into his house last week and left a knife on his bed.

Somebody doesn't like him.

He died.

What a tragedy.

From what I have read, he probably had brain damage and wouldn't be able to play football again. I feel bad for his daughter.

As a lifelong Redskins fan, I followed the news about Sean Taylor closely yesterday afternoon and evening. I was encouraged by the late reports last night, that he had responded to a doctor's request to squeeze his hand and that Sean had made some facial expressions.

To wake up to the news that he had died brought tears to my eyes. As a pastor, I deal with death and dying a great deal, but there are some deaths that are more just plain senseless than others.

Was Sean Taylor "just" a football player? No. He was a 24-year old young man on the way to becoming not just a great football player, but to becoming a man. He came out of a terrible environment and made some very poor choices in not making a break with those in that environment, and got into some stupid trouble early in his career. But, according to those who knew him, since the birth of his daughter he had turned things around - ironically enough the home he was shot in he had moved to in order to get away from those in his past.

Now, his daughter will never really know him.

If there is a lesson here, it is that the choices we make when we are young can impact our lives - even end our lives. Something doesn't seem right about these repeated break-ins; it will be no surprise to find that this had something to do with Sean's past.

I'll have a long talk about this with my 16-year old son tonight.

One other thing. . . young men, particularly young black men, die senselessly every day in this country. This is not a time for discussion about guns or any political stuff, but a time when maybe a face can be put on this continuing tragedy, and a time when we can consider, and pledge to overcome, the hopelessness in which some grow up.

As someone who teaches in an urban high school, I wish I could post an easy answer to the issues you mention. I see it all around me, and I feel powerless to stop it. I have zero credibility with these young men, so even though I try, my two cents are worth exactly that much to them.

It's a shame that for many black men, sports is the only way out, but they bring some of the negative elements that they grew up with into their new lives.

There were three Freshman girls at Maddie's school who were caught drinking at a football game. They were suspended from school. They have been playing club soccer most of their lives and had made it to the JV team and will be dropped from the team.

Their parents have probably invested thousands of dollars and many hours of time into soccer and the kids will probably never be allowed to play competitive soccer again.

Kids do stupid things.

When someone breaks in and leaves a knife on your bed and 8 days later breaks in when you are known to be at home and breaks down a locked bedroon door and shoots you in the groin it is not a random burglary gone wrong Just My Opinion

Were they kicked off the select team as well, or just the JV squad?

As it turns out, most of the college recruiting is made from select team tournaments and not high school soccer. In fact, there is a growing trend of players who only play in select tournaments and not for their high schools. (In Nebraska, Millard North HS boys team suddenly become the dominant state champion last Spring because it had six senior boys, all Div I recruits, decide to play for the team after only playing select soccer for 3 years.)

The brother of Taylor's little sister's boyfriend, along w/ his buddies. Went to her 18th birthday party at the house, and saw how rich Taylor was. They broke in to rob him, and say they didn't expect anyone to be home

It didn't get resurrected as much as it finally reached a conclusion. It took this long -- from November 2007 to January 2014 -- for the judicial process to get here. The sentence was handed down yesterday on Thursday, Jan. 24.
