For five minutes, Yo Yo Ma was in charge of the country.

CNN had a little piece of text that said he was president at 12 whether he had taken the oath yet or not.

Interesting.

Hmmmm.... too bad Alexander Haig didn't learn the cello. He might have had a shot.

I guess it still counts even if the Chief Justice messes up the administration of the oath. It was amusing watching Obama's face and wondering if he was going to correct Justice Roberts or let him catch the error.

The video feed we were watching couldn't keep up with the audio. From the picture I saw while the oath was taken, our new president is the guy who was playing the oboe.

Didn't see any oboes. In the quartet, there was a clarinet, but no oboe.

And on the music, does anyone here know what the first part of the piece was? The intro said it was arranged for today by John Williams, but not that he composed it. The second part was obviously from "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copeland. I thought the first part was pretty, but couldn't place it.

Building services has removed the portraits of Bush and Cheney that hung in the lobby of our building; no replacements yet because the new Prez and Veep haven't sat for official portraits yet. I wonder what they do with those old portraits?

OK, so I just flunked musical instrument identification.

The clarinetist is our new president, then. :)

On the music:

Apparently, Copeland didn't write it, either.

"It’s called “Air and Simple Gifts, ” the centerpiece of which was to be “an exuberant rendering,” in Mr. Williams’s words, of traditional Shaker hymn “The Gift to Be Simple,” which Aaron Copland made famous in his 1944 ballet “Appalachian Spring.”"

Are you sure it wasn't "Stairway to Heaven"?

"Simple Gifts" -- also sung by Marilyn Horne at Bill Clinton's first inauguration in 1993 :)

And, under an alternate title ("Lord of the Dance"), was played last night during the Irish group's presentation on "Superstars of Dance".

Thanks, ear! Yes, if you've been in a Catholic church lately, you may also know it as "Lord of the Dance." :D

(Is it just Catholic?)

I remember a version getting play on Christian radio in the 80s. It was by John Fischer.

I have one of those of Gerald Ford I believe. I just asked for and was given it. I think it came from a military base but don't remember for sure. I became an Eagle Scout in 1976, whilst Ford was still President and for some reason I wanted it. No doubt because he was an Eagle Scout as well. As a professional pack rat no doubt I still have it.

Somewhere...

A photo or painting? I have one of my namesake. Taken by Mathew Brady I believe. I just wrote to the Archives or some such place, sent them $6 or so and they sent me an 8x10 of Grant and I later ordered one of my fellow birthday buddy, Robert E. Lee.
