20 years ago today...

#1 Post by danielh41 » Tue Jan 20, 2009 10:55 am

Inauguration days always feel strange to me. I remember quite vividly taking a break from college classes to watch George H.W. Bush's inauguration. I had spent my high school and early college years with Ronald Reagan as President, and it felt really strange that he was no longer President. Frankly, I felt sad. Even though I was in middle school during the Carter years, I remembered how bad the news was and how my parents struggled with everything. You seemingly couldn't go an entire day without grocery prices being raised. So the turnaround under Reagan was very vivid in my mind.

I also remember 16 years ago today, when Clinton was sworn in. Yes, I had voted for him (I'm sorry to say) mainly out of a frustration with Bush (if you make a "no new taxes" promise, then you had better keep it). I was born in Arkansas, so it was also neat to see someone from Arkansas in the White House.

And then my feeling 8 years ago was a feeling of "We dodged a bullet" by not having Gore succeed in his attempts to steal the election. Gore's envirnomental "work" over the last 8 years has only solidified those feelings in retrospect.

I honestly don't know what I'm feeling today. I guess fearful is as good a word as any. I feel that Obama's stated positions on issues are wrong on just about every count, so I am fearful for the country and the direction we are headed. The question is, how will Obama change and adapt to his new job (the most difficult job in the world now), and will his changes be for the better?

Why?

I'll admit that daniel posted some questionable things during the campaign but I don't see how this particular post of his warrants an ignore of him entirely. I can understand if daniel was on ignore for you in the past but I don't understand why that post will put him back over the edge for you.

I miss nothing except the feeling that the right to free and open speech remains on this board.

The day that that right gets taken away - I am outta here.

I also have the right to not listen to anyone's free speech.

I love this bored.

So you just ignore people you don't agree with or those who simply state what they are feeling today and on similar days in the past?

He lost me when he falsely claimed that Gore tried to steal the 2000 election.

But I still refuse to put him on ignore. No matter how much I disagree with him, I still read everything he posts here. It's my duty as an American to acknowledge differing views, whether right or wrong.

Wow, I didn't realize how un-American I am.

I will not acknowledge everyone's differing view. No more than I will acknowledge everyone's concurring view.

It is not my duty as an American to do so.

For me it is the negativity.

I don't want to spend anytime on the negative energy.
I feel that Obama's stated positions on issues are wrong on just about every count, so I am fearful for the country and the direction we are headed.
I am not fearful.

I am optimistic.

And I chose not to spend on my time on the Bored on fear and negative energy.

I will say that I do occasionally read Daniel's posts so I have not given up. I wish him happiness and less fear.

But that is just me.

I don't always agree with danielh41, but at least I can appreciate his cultural references.

It was twenty years ago today,
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile.
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years,
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
We hope you will enjoy the show,
We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
Sit back and let the evening go.
Sgt. Pepper's lonely, Sgt. Pepper's lonely,
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
It's wonderful to be here,
It's certainly a thrill.
You're such a lovely audience,
We'd like to take you home with us,
We'd love to take you home.
I don't really want to stop the show,
But I thought that you might like to know,
That the singer's going to sing a song,
And he wants you all to sing along.
So let me introduce to you
The one and only Billy Shears
And Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
