Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/20/09

#1 Post by Iben Browning » Tue Jan 20, 2009 6:47 am

It was nice of LB to allow me to host this Tuesday Wordplay game for him, especially since I warned him all the way back in 1990 about that earthquake that hit back in April. I wonder if the new President needs a seer to warn him about impending disasters? I'm pretty sure the fact that I'm dead will not keep me from getting a job in Washington, I mean, look at how long they let Strom Thurmond continue to serve after he died.....

As usual on Tuesdays, each of the following songs contains a single word in common....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 500 points if you can predict just how big of a disaster LB's Winter LS is going to be.....

1. Do you know why I stop and stare
And smile when you walk by
And how I call you up at night
I hang up the phone and I cry

2. Dance all night, get real loose
You don't need no bad excuse
Dance all night with anyone
Don't let nobody pick your fun

3. By the time you get this message
Its gonna be too late (uh)
So dont bother pagin me
Cos Ill be on my way (what you doin')

4. Get out from that kitchen
and rattle those pots and pans,
Get out from that kitchen
and rattle those pots and pans.
Well, roll my breakfast,
'cause I'm a hungry man.

5. Ah, everybody get on the floor, let's dance
Don't fight the feeling give yourself a chance

6. I see that look in your eyes
And what it's telling me
And you know, ooh girl that I'm not shy
I'm glad you picked up, on my telepathy, now baby

7. Well I know that the Boogiloo is out of sight
but the shingaling she's paying tonight
but if that were you and me hotta baba
I would have shown you how to do right

8. We got the rhythm tonight
All the rest know we’re the best
Our shadows crash in the light
Twistin’, turnin’, we keep burnin’

9. Fat cats big ass rats
jumping to the beat
black, black oil
and crack
in a big black limousine

10. No matter how the race is run it always ends the same
Another room without a view awaits downtown
You can shake me for a while
Live it up in style
No matter what you do I'm gonna take you down

11. You tease me with your loving to play hard to get
Cause you do know that I love it
You walk around this town with your head all up in the sky
And I do know that I want you

12. Keeping out of trouble with eyes in the back of my face
Kicking ass in the class and they tell me you're a damn disgrace
They tell me what they think but they stink and I really don't care
Got a mind of my own, move on, get out of my hair
Disaster strikes December 3, 1990! You have been warned!

Boy, you know it's bad when it's Tuesday Wordplay, you know the word and you can't even think of 12 songs with that word (and three that you can think of you don't see used, ha!).

1. Do you know why I stop and stare
And smile when you walk by
And how I call you up at night
I hang up the phone and I cry

2. Dance all night, get real loose
You don't need no bad excuse
Dance all night with anyone
Don't let nobody pick your fun

Shake It Up - The Cars

3. By the time you get this message
Its gonna be too late (uh)
So dont bother pagin me
Cos Ill be on my way (what you doin')

4. Get out from that kitchen
and rattle those pots and pans,
Get out from that kitchen
and rattle those pots and pans.
Well, roll my breakfast,
'cause I'm a hungry man.

Shake Rattle & Roll - Bill Haley and His Comets (I was going to be a JJCPW and say Brian Setzer, but I realized I was mixing it up with Jump Jive & Wail. Ha!)

5. Ah, everybody get on the floor, let's dance
Don't fight the feeling give yourself a chance

Shake Your Booty - KC and the Sunshine Band

6. I see that look in your eyes
And what it's telling me
And you know, ooh girl that I'm not shy
I'm glad you picked up, on my telepathy, now baby

7. Well I know that the Boogiloo is out of sight
but the shingaling she's paying tonight
but if that were you and me hotta baba
I would have shown you how to do right

Shake a Tailfeather - Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels

8. We got the rhythm tonight
All the rest know we’re the best
Our shadows crash in the light
Twistin’, turnin’, we keep burnin’

9. Fat cats big ass rats
jumping to the beat
black, black oil
and crack
in a big black limousine

10. No matter how the race is run it always ends the same
Another room without a view awaits downtown
You can shake me for a while
Live it up in style
No matter what you do I'm gonna take you down

11. You tease me with your loving to play hard to get
Cause you do know that I love it
You walk around this town with your head all up in the sky
And I do know that I want you

12. Keeping out of trouble with eyes in the back of my face
Kicking ass in the class and they tell me you're a damn disgrace
They tell me what they think but they stink and I really don't care
Got a mind of my own, move on, get out of my hair

Shake a Leg - AC/DC

After giving this way too much thought, I can only think of a few other songs that would fit:

Shake Your Groove Thing - Peaches and Herb
Milk Shake - Kelis
Shake It - Metro Station (I'm so disappointed, I love this song! I have $5 worth of free mp3s from Amazon and this is on my short list.)

and Shakin' by Eddie Money (but that's getting a bit lax)

Since I'm pretty sure I would recognize any part of Kelis or Metro Station and you might be too much of a purist for Shakin' to satisfy the requirements, I'll guess Peaches & Herb for all the other ones.

"Shake Ya Ass" was in the game orignally since it was a cult classic from our truck unloading days at the Squiggly about 10 years ago, but then I took a look at the lyrics and..... I'm no prude by far, but I couldn't find even a small segment I felt comfortable posting here.....

I didn't even think of that one when I was trying to think of "Shake" songs! Not that it would have done me much good, the only words I can remember in the whole song are the title and watch yourself. Maybe the prude in me has blocked it all out. Ha!

Are any of these songs written after 1950?? Really I want to know. Usually I can at least pick up one or two songs that are written in the last decade but I've got absolutely nothing today! Shouldn't this game be equally spread throughout the years? Don't make me break out Exploded Nose because I will. I know it's a compliment because you are afraid of me, but step up and be a man!

For any of the others, how about Shake, by Sam Cooke, or Shake Your Money Maker, by Elmore James?

Shake for the Shiek - Escape Club (I have heard Escape Club mistakenly slapped with the OHW tag a lot, but they had a few minor hits after their best known song Wild Wild West. This was one of them, and I don't think I've heard it since it hit the airwaves in 1990, as it has slipped deep into the dustbin of music history. In fact, had the chorus for this song not randomly entered my mind one night while I was on the computer, it would not be in this game. Really, I was just sitting here on night, when all of a sudden I had the following going through my mind....

I'm gonna shake baby shake, until I feel my body break
And I got news, bad news, my heart's dropped down to my shoes

Now, those aren't the right lyrics, but it's how my subconsciousness always remembered them, and it was enough for me to be able to Google up the song as it was driving me crazy what it was and who did it. And I haven't been keeping track, but I think this song was the first shutout of the season....)

I thought you didn't take attendance! :P

For the record, I played yesterday, in the sense of reading the LS and not having a clue.

Why would I need to take attendance to tell if participation is up or down?

Since I keep the scores for the M-Th games side by side in my notebook, it is easy to tell whether the number of scoring players has gone up or down each day.....
