WWTBAM Bored

Did anyone else participate in this in school? Its a trivia competition that's held twice a year. On the day of the competition, the school gets a team together and puts in a computer disk that has the competition, with multiple choice questions. We usually had about thirty people at my school, with a projection screen so we could see the questions. It was pretty raucous. One kid was the typer, and if you were sure of the answer, you would shout "Definitely C!" then if you were wrong we would throw things at you.

The mascot is a Great Auk, and if you got the answer right it came on screen and make awful puns, like "Auk-cellent work" I participated in 5th and 6th grade and in high school. For some reason my junior high didn't have it.

This makes me smile like you wouldn't believe. It makes my day, and the day is young, with many exiting events still to come.



I was a very early participant in the Knowledge Master Open, clear back in 1984. I still have a Great Auk sticker on my boom box, which I mostly use as a radio these days. The local students yelled out "Auk!" to their teammates if they were sure of the answer, something starting with B, maybe Beta or something if they were just a little less than 100%, a C word for 50% sure, etc. They would take a VERY quick consensus if nobody had better than a C.

I thought I recalled Knowledge Master Open... then you mentioned Great Auk and I knew exactly what you were talking about.... I remember it from Junior High....

And not great memories either.... I didn't make the team....

I redeemed myself by making and becoming one of the better players on the quiz bowl team my senior year....

Edison High School won the Knowledge Master Open the year that I was captain of the team. (Jeff was on the team too!)

Maddie is playing for Edison this year. Last year they came in 9th in the country, this year they didn't so as well, they were 33rd out of 695 teams.

Yes.

She was recruited for their team. Since her school doesn't have a team, she is allowed to play for them.

This would never happen if she was playing an athletic sport, but nobody is really picky about quiz bowl eligibility.
