Anybody got a Kindle?

#1 Post by trevor_macfee » Sat Jan 17, 2009 12:51 pm

As I take all the books off our bookshelves in preparation for new floors and carpets throughout the house (the installers will move the furniture, but not if anything's on the shelves), I am revisiting an earlier thought I had about buying an Amazon Kindle.

I'm interested in anyone's experiences with the device and their opinion of whether it's worth the (in my opinion) considerable cost.

I know there's a long wait but if it's worth it I'd be willing to wait and/or pick up one on e-bay.

And, the bottom line - do you find that you read more?

I don't own one, but I played around with one to see if I'd like it.

It has a nice feel and it has the advantage of being able to change the font size. You can download a new book almost immediately. Some of the publishers are very clever, they only charge $2.00 for the first book in a series to get you hooked. Most books are in the $7-9 range. You can download a book anywhere you can get wi-fi.

It's about the size of a paperback, not too heavy either. You can bookmark passages you like and you can search for keywords. They are hard to get your hands on one right now. After Oprah featured them on her show, Amazon sold out.

I asked for Kindle opinions a long time ago and I don't think anybody had one (at the time) but, as I recall, nobody was really in favour of it. I never did any more research beyond my early infatuation.

(Do a search under Kindle, because I don't remember what ID I was using at the time.)

Thanks for the replies - the link to the old thread was especially helpful. I'm probably not ready to buy one of these now, but maybe the next generation.

You know how there's an exaltation of larks and a murder of crows?

There's also a kindle of kittens!

Good luck with the other kind.

Books must be paper, and only paper. Period.

Funny you would mention this. When I got my new phone books last month, only the Yellow Pages part was printed on paper. The White Pages part was just a paper sleeve with a CD in it. I think the printed White Pages may still be available by special request. This is a milestone in my life, because I have never discarded or recycled any of my old phone books. I've always just added them to my shelves, for no good reason, other than because I could. I'm starting to rethink whether such pointless traditions should be continued. Maybe the White Pages CD is an omen.

Can I get a Kindle version of the 1981 Austin phone book?

That just seem silly. Is Austin a pretty big town?

I always carry a phone book in my car. Do that many people now have Raspberries that they can get phone numbers everywhere, at any time?

And, maybe it's just me, but doesn't it seem easier to grab the phone book than to 1. Boot up the computer 2. Find the disc 3. Load the program 4. Find your information?

In addition to not being able to make change or figure out the time on a non-digital clock, soon people will not be able to figure out how alphabetization works.

Ha, I was going up the thread backwards, saw Liberace's avatar and was wondering what kind of opening he could possibly find to to work in a comment in a Kindle thread.

I continually underestimate people.

And I had forgotten how totally cute Whipped Cream Fanny was. Maybe I should start revisiting old IDs instead of making new ones.

Edit: And this is Number 1200 for Kiki Fanny!!11
