Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/16/09

by The Beast Sisters
Hi, it's LB's sisters here! After all the torture Billy always made us put up with when we were growing up, we decided to hijack one of his LS games and give him a little payback! You see, Billy likes a lot of music that really sucks because he's a huge dork, so the four of us compiled a nice list of LB's guilty pleasures here for today's Free For All Friday. These are all songs that most people would never admit to liking, just like we would have rather preferred nobody knew we once went to a New Kids on the Block concert. We still haven't fully paid him back for that yet....

This game is open until Monday morning. And since we are going to score the game, Sister #4 has decided that Clem will get no JJC points this time.....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. When I kissed you, girl, I knew how sweet a kiss could be
(I know how sweet a kiss can be)
Like the summer sunshine pour your sweetness over me
(Pour your sweetness over me)

2. Cryin' on my pillow
Lonely in my bed
Then I heard a voice beside me
And she softly said

3. Please don't talk about love tonight.
Your sweet talking won't make it right.
Love and lies just bring me down
When you've got women all over town.

4. I can see it in your walk
Tell it when you talk
I can see it in everything you do
Even in your thoughts

5. Last night I had this strangest dream
I sailed away to China, in a little rowboat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry cleaned

6. Joggin' in the mornings, go man go
Work up to the hill's top, muscles grow

7. My loneliness
Is killing me (and I)
I must confess
I still believe (still believe)
When I'm not with you I lose my mind

8. Zappin' it to ya
The pressure's everywhere
Goin' right through ya
The fever's in the air
Oh yeah, it's there!

9. Dirty babe
You see the shackles
Baby I’m your slave
I’ll let you whip me if I misbehave

10. Now why would I ever stop doing this?
When others making records that just don't hit
I've toured around the world from London to the Bay

11. My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way

12. A woman that I know just came from Majorca Spain
She smiled because I did not understand
Then she held out a 10 pound bag of Cocaine
She said it was the best in all the land

13. I used to be a renegade, I used to fool around
But I couldn't take the punishment, and had to settle down

14. You keep coming to me
I can dig your dynamite
Know the way you move
Get in the groove
You're driving me crazy, crazy for you

15. You can tell the world, you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes up when I'm gone
You can tell your friends just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke about me on the phone

Damn, I thought this would be a bunch of dippy late 80's and 90's songs I'd never heard of and I'd get to spend all weekend trying to think of songs I didn't even know, but the BS dipped into the Wayback Machine just so I could get this out of the way quick. TY, Ladies!

Spoiler
1. When I kissed you, girl, I knew how sweet a kiss could be
(I know how sweet a kiss can be)
Like the summer sunshine pour your sweetness over me
(Pour your sweetness over me)

Sugar Sugar - The Archies

2. Cryin' on my pillow
Lonely in my bed
Then I heard a voice beside me
And she softly said

Undercover Angel - Alan O'Day (We used to love to do the oooo-weeeee part)

3. Please don't talk about love tonight.
Your sweet talking won't make it right.
Love and lies just bring me down
When you've got women all over town.

I Love the Night Life - Alicia Bridges

4. I can see it in your walk
Tell it when you talk
I can see it in everything you do
Even in your thoughts

Strike One~!

5. Last night I had this strangest dream
I sailed away to China, in a little rowboat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry cleaned

Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder (I can never remember if it's Sweet or Wilder, so I just picked one)

6. Joggin' in the mornings, go man go
Work up to the hill's top, muscles grow

Macho Man - The Village People

7. My loneliness
Is killing me (and I)
I must confess
I still believe (still believe)
When I'm not with you I lose my mind

Strike Two 2~! (Although this one seems familiar)

Okay, I had this breathy weak voice going through my head during the rest of my answers and I think I this is Britney Spears (the young variety) but I don't know what song it was. Since I only know three Britney Spears titles, I'll go with Oops, I Did it Again.

8. Zappin' it to ya
The pressure's everywhere
Goin' right through ya
The fever's in the air
Oh yeah, it's there!

Strike Three~3!

9. Dirty babe
You see the shackles
Baby I’m your slave
I’ll let you whip me if I misbehave

Sexyback - Justin TImberlake f/Timbaland (I'm with you on this one, love it!)

10. Now why would I ever stop doing this?
When others making records that just don't hit
I've toured around the world from London to the Bay

Stop! Hammer Time!

U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer

11. My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way

Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band

12. A woman that I know just came from Majorca Spain
She smiled because I did not understand
Then she held out a 10 pound bag of Cocaine
She said it was the best in all the land

The No No Song - Ringo Starr

13. I used to be a renegade, I used to fool around
But I couldn't take the punishment, and had to settle down

Strike Three ~! (again, because I might have drawn a walk on Britney Spears)

14. You keep coming to me
I can dig your dynamite
Know the way you move
Get in the groove
You're driving me crazy, crazy for you

It's Boom Boom Boom but I have no idea who did it, so I'll just say Freddie Washington in a weak bid for a JJCP

15. You can tell the world, you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes up when I'm gone
You can tell your friends just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke about me on the phone

Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus (leave Billy alone, this song still makes me smile whenever I hear it, which isn't often enough)

Especially when she bemoaned the "younger generation".
Spoiler
Since I think the singer of that song is older than she is. Ha!
I'm thoroughly impressed that you knew #2, though. I thought I was the only one (besides lb, apparently) who remembered that song!

I am sitting at the chiropractor's office and on my blackberry it doesn't look like my "spoiler" is working - so I tried to edit it. I didn't change any answers!

I won't worry about it right now I guess. This is just too stressful!!

Especially when she bemoaned the "younger generation".

Since I think the singer of that song is older than she is. Ha!
I'm thoroughly impressed that you knew #2, though. I thought I was the only one (besides lb, apparently) who remembered that song!

Well now that I've looked it up, yes, the singer most certainly is older than me! Guess I dint pay all
that much attention back then. I'm telling you, I lived a sheltered life. I thought those were the "good
old days".

OK, let's see how closely aligned Beast and I are with guilty pleasures. For all the songs I know (pre-1984) I'll give my ranking from my aforementioned list.

1. Sugar Sugar - The Archies - 1969 list #40 out of 79.
2. Undercover Angel - Alan O'Day - 1977 list #95 out of 126
3. I Love The Nightlife - Alicia Bridges - 1978 list #23 out of 141
4. You Got It (The Right Stuff) - New Kids On The Block - I haven't gotten to this list yet, but if this song isn't dead last for the year, it will be very close.
5. Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder - I haven't finished 1984 yet, but this song is currently #54 out of 131.
6. Macho Man - Village People - 1978 list #113 out of 141
7 Nope
8. Electric Youth - Debbie Gibson. Haven't gotten to this list yet either, but this one will be low. Only In My Dreams will be quite high, though.
9. Nope
10. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer - I don't really think of this one too much as a Guilty Pleasure. I think it hold up.
11. Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band -1976 list #67 out of 117
12. No No Song - Ringo Starr - 1975 list #76 out of 116
13. Hip To Be Square - Huey Lewis and the News. It'll be smack dab in the middle of its year, I predict
14. Nope
15. Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus - I'm not sure if this song hit the Hot 100. I'll have to check. If it did, it would be towards the bottom.

So the only one I really agree with you on is I Love The Nightlife (and U Can't Touch This, which to me doesn't fit the category. Not that you asked, but here are songs that I consider to be Guilty Pleasures, by decade:

Rock-In Robin - Bobby Day - my #1 song of 1958
Those Were The Days - Mary Hopkin - my #4 song of 1968
Snowbird - Anne Murray - my #5 song of 1970
I Love You - Climax Blues Band - my #1 song of 1981
Hazard - Richard Marx - 1992
Don't Cha - Pussycat Dolls - 2005
