I had no idea he was still alive! I remember him from Art Appreciation class, and always assiociated him with the early part of last century, perhaps mistakenly....

Some people must be racking up some good scores on their Ghoul Pool picks by now.

Perhaps your Art Appreciation class focused on his father, N.C. Wyeth.

Andrew's the name I remember. Never heard of NC Wyeth before.....

I just remember all of semester two was mostly art from the 20th Century, so I probably just lumped him in the wrong era. I used to love seeing the Artists category come up on Jeopardy, because I retained what I learned in those classes for quite a while, but not so much anymore.....

RIP indeed. "Christina's World" is simply haunting.

Plus, his image allowed me to garner 100K points on Sploofus a month or so ago.

And, we all know, it's all about the points...

My godparents were very active volunteers at the museum in Chadds Ford when they were alive.

I have a book with his signature thanks to them.

I will look for it tonight.

I used Wyeth for a Seven Clues about a million years ago. I can't remember which clue the Helga paintings were, but that was all everybody needed to get it.

As much of a stir as they caused, I was astonished to read that art critics found them pedestrian and unremarkable. I thought they were fascinating and can easily see how they rocked his marriage.

From about a million years ago -- OK, maybe a thousand, I was somewhere in my teens -- I remember a lovely painting of a woman napping in a field with a farmhouse right behind her. I kept it and later used it to illustrate one of Shakespeare's quotations from Julius Caesar. I called it "Ambition should be made of sterner stuff." I thought it was Wyeth but couldn't find it in Google images just now. Anybody maybe remember the title, or if I'm misremembering the artist? Any help appreciated.

I should have picked some people that were, you know, actually old.

Oddly enough, just this past Saturday I visited both the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford and the Delaware Art Museum, each of which are maybe 15 minutes from my house. The latter has a nice collection of works by Howard Pyle, the founder of the Brandywine School, and many of his students, including Andrew's father, N.C. Many wonderful, classic examples of illustration, which is all but a lost art anymore.

At Chadds Ford, there was at least one work of Andrew's dated 2008, so he was still active up to the end, despite his age. I noted that all of the many informational blurbs accompanying the artwork clearly referred to him in the present tense, and I recall wondering how long it would be before they had to change them....

I also did not know he was still living...

The parents of one of my first boyfriends had an original painting of his. The only other work of his that I knew of at the time was the one of the blind girl in the field (his sister, I think?). The painting that they had was very similar, but without the sister. I think it was the first 'important' piece of art I'd ever really seen up close outside of a museum. It was beautiful.
