When it's REALLY cold, WAY below zero (F) ... get a pot of boiling water and throw the water into the air (keep hanging on to the pot

The hot water will pop like firecrackers!

Do not do this in the direction of your front steps or sidewalk.

My friends and I were entertained for hours.

It was too cold to ski. Alcohol was involved.

We weren't naked.

That's on Jan. 1st during the Polar Bear Swim.

I can see getting nekkid and jumping into the water in the middle of the winter. I mean, I can see other people doing it. I mean, I don't want to see it. But I can believe that other people would want to.

But what did the polar bears ever do to you? They're just minding their own business, and you jump nekkid into the water with them? You're lucky they don't eat you!

Maybe they're lonely and want company! Aside from New Year's, nobody wants to go swimming with them.

Even when they bring the drinks and the tunes.

That's because polar bears are mean drunks and terrible dancers.

I've heard that on a winter's day in Fairbanks, Alaska, if you toss a cup of hot coffee in the air, nothing comes down. --Bob

I was rushin' because I was in a big hurry to get my furniture refinished.

Besides that, polar bears are lousy tippers, too.

Thank goodness for that. Have you seen their nails? They could do a lot of damage to one's g-string...

Are you saying it'll instantly sublimate instead of freezing? :?

I'm not saying anything. I've never been to Fairbanks. I'm relating what I was told once by someone who lived there for a year. --Bob

Then I guess I don't know what that story means by "nothing coming down". I think I've seen this demonstration on TV (from Alaska or some other very cold place) of water flash freezing. Now, all that might blow away in the wind, but it doesn't just disappear.

Perhaps excessively low humidity permits it to evaporate before it freezes? --Bob

A chemist knew what sublimation was?

What are the odds? 8)

I forgot to check last night, but I bet somebody has posted a video of this water experiment on YouTube!

What else is the internet for? :)

And, indeed, a number of people have performed this experiment, as revealed by a YouTube search for boiling water freezing.

Here's a short one (without sound):

Some of it does hit the ground, Bob. 8)
