They are about to have a name the team contest for the new MLS team in Philadelphia. The team will start play in 2010 at a stadium to be built in Chester, PA.
Here is the list of names that will apparently be up for vote starting soon:
AC Philadelphia
SC Philadelphia
Philadelphia Union
Philadelphia City
Pretty crappy list if you ask me. "City" is a common name used in Britain when there are multiple teams from one city. Manchester City as opposed to Manchester United or Bristol City as opposed to Bristol Rovers. It will be interesting to see the reaction from people in Philadelphia. The soccer fans that are already discussing it on message boards and are all over the place with all four choices receiving a majority of negative votes.
Two more expansion MLS teams to start play in 2011 will be announced sometime this spring. Candidates are Miami, St. Louis, Portland, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Atlanta.
Current MLS teams:
EASTERN CONFERENCE
Chicago Fire
Columbus Crew
DC United
Kansas City Wizards
New England Revolution
New York Red Bulls
Toronto FC
WESTERN CONFERENCE
Chivas USA
Colorado Rapids
FC Dallas
Houston Dynamo
LA Galaxy
Real Salt Lake
San Jose Earthquakes
Seattle Sounders FC (inaugural season in 2009)
The 2009 MLS regular season starts on March 19.
BTW, I know that this thread will now fill up with people proposing "humorous" names for the Philadelphia team. Never fails.

Also, the U.S. Men's national team has a big game coming up in February.
Wednesday, Feb. 11 - U.S.A. v. Mexico at Columbus, OH, 7 pm EST on ESPN2.
This is the first of ten 2010 World Cup qualifiers that the U.S. will play this year. The U.S. has to finish in the top three of the six teams remaining in the CONCACAF (basically North America) region to automatically qualify for the World Cup next year in South Africa.
The U.S. has not lost to Mexico at home in quite a while but these are always good games. If you have not seen big-time international soccer this might be a good match to check out.

I'm kinda partial to SC Philadelphia. It would be nice to have an eastern outpost.

Silly Uly. They want to name the team after me!

I was at the previous two Columbus OH qualifiers vs Mexico and hope to be at this one; tickets go on sale 1/27 by VISA credit card and 1/28 general sales. Gotta credit Melly indirectly, she mentioned to me that the Temple basketball crowd chants the soccer Ole' Ole' Ole' chant for an Argentinian guard (Juan Fernandez) and that reminded me that I had not checked BigSoccer.com in a month and the next round of qualifiers including Mex. were coming up.

I'll probably be attending some of the Philly MLS games; due to my family I'll remain a Red Bull season ticket holder. The new Red Bull Park will be close to the NJT Newark station and relatively easy for me to reach by train.

I considered going to the USA-MEX game but I'm going to Cancun for the Dynamo away leg in the CCL the first week of March so I decided not to go to Columbus.

Any opinion on the Philly names?
If I voted, I'd probably vote for Union.

Not too excited about the names so I'd vote for ShinyCar Philly
