It is too cold here for salt to work on the roads. So far, schools are just delayed.
Everyone stay safe out there.

It's only 21° here. That's just 1° less than yesterday morning. It's going to get down to 7° tonight though.

9 degrees on my car's thermometer this AM. Wind chill is supposed to be well below zero later on today. Real temperature is predicted around there tomorrow AM. Brrr!

-2°, which is nothing compared to what you folks in the upper midwest have.
And it'll start improving by the weekend.

Nope, no sticking out of tongues from here . . . they'd stick to the flagpole! Even in warmer OK it's only 15* here, with a 1* windchill. My students will be whining all day. Oh, joy!

Ten degrees at 6AM with a wind chill of -4. Tonight the low is supposed to go down to 1 degree (lower in the suburbs) for the coldest night of the winter thus far; tomorrow's high is expected to reach 13 degrees.

The news made a big deal last night out of the fact that my hometown school district was the first in the area to announce they were closing today due to the brutal wind chills. Then the superintendent gets on TV and says it's the first time he ever remembers having to close school due to cold weather, and the brilliant reporter milks that into a "Wow, this is the first time in history...." Um, our schools closed down for 3 different days in December 1989 due to 2 different cold waves when I was in 9th grade, and I'm sure they were closed for a few days when that big February '96 cold shot came through.....
If I can't trust the news to get a local story right, why the hell should I believe them for something of a bigger scale.....?

Are you saying the superintendent can't remember the entire history of the school district?

I'm saying the reporter shouldn't make bad assumptions and report them as truths. The superintendant specifically said it was the first time HE had ever had to cancel school for the cold weather. Apparently it was the reporter who thought that he had been the superintendant for the entire history of the school district....

20 below (actual) now. No school. No great rise in temps expected today. It's colder than a well-diggers ass in the Klondike...

Now let me tell you sonny, back in my day me and little Kiki had to trudge 40 miles through 2 foot deep snow and advancing glaciers, uphill both ways, with no shoes on our feet, just to get to our one room schoolhouse that didn't have any heat. And it didn't kill us! We are raising a generation of pansies, I tell ya!

My school district is 15 miles north of me and I guess colder, but our problems boiled down to broken pipes and buses that wouldn't start. We have about 9600 kids in the district and 7800 ride the buses. It's a brutal day to stand out in the open wind.
I was frozen bringing in the paper. It's a good day to put away Christmas which I delayed at my kids' request until they left for college. The house always feels naked when I take everything down.

Should I mention that it was 88 degrees here and I couldn't find a pool for Zap at Target yesterday to help him cool off.

I believe that's what lily meant by "please no sticking tongues out from the warm weather BB's."
Even if Zap needed to do a lot of tongue-sticking-out, to stay cool!

December 1989 was when we in Boise had four weeks of lows of -20° and highs of around 0°.

We had similar weather this morning, with a bit less wind. It was like -16 with a wind chill in the mid -30s when the kids went to school. Only rural schools delayed school starts in Eastern Nebraska. I think that I heard that it has been 12 years since school was cancelled exclusively because of the temperature.

You're right, Appa. I thought we were going to be delayed. We do have a plan for it, but the buses were our issue.
You guys are right about walking too. I walked over 2 miles to high school and only closed once in the big snow of January 68. twenty some inches in 12 hours. other than we trudged to school. we weren't allowed to wear pants then, either, so I wore pants under my skirt and then had to take them off at school.

I won't stick my tongue out. I'll just put on shorts and a t-shirt and head outside.
