Wow -- how long did he have left on his term?

He had almost rehabilitated himself, hadn't he?

Maybe he's part of the Ted Stevens-FBI bilge.

Or maybe there is some sort of naked pictures involved. [Shudder]

He looks like he is wearing lipstick. It isn't a good color for him.

Seems that there is a new law coming into effect January 1. After January 1, if you leave congress, you have to wait 2 years before you can be a lobbyist. If you leave congress before January 1, you only have to wait 1 year.

I say Trent is cashing out now.

Lott was elected in 2006 and his term runs to 2012.

His departure will have no effect on the balance of power as a Republican governor of Mississippi (Haley Barbour) will appoint another Republican.

This appointed Senator will serve until the 2008 election, when a special election will be held to choose a Senator to serve out the remainder of the term.

The new law wouldn't apply to him at all so he could start lobbying immediately.

Probably the White League.

Not one that regulates ex-congressmen.

Find the "Honest Leadership and Open Government Act" (S. 1) for what's covered.

There's a new wrinkle to this situation.

Under Mississippi law, if Lott's resignation is effective in 2007, the governor must call a special election within 90 days to fill out the balance of his term. This can be very risky for the Republicans since turnout at such an election could be quite low. In addition, during the interim, his seat would be vacant.

If, on the other hand, his resignation is effective in 2008, the governor can appoint an interim senator and the special election for the remaining four years of Lott's term would be held in November 2008.

Gov. Barbour may try an end run and attempt to actually announce the vacancy and special election in calendar year 2008, in which case Mississippi's Secretary of State, a Democrat, would probably take the issue to court.

The Democrats do have a potentially strong Senatorial candidate in Mississippi, the former Attorney General, who could seriously contend for this vacancy, regardless of when it actually occurs.

A lot of news folks missed this! Kudos to whoever found that.

Or maybe the Larry Craig bulge.

I heard that somebody asked Craig the other day whether he'd made up his mind yet on what he's gonna do. He said that he hadn't yet. The guy told him he should "quit stalling."

Craig: "Oh, I have. Honest"

Or something like that.
