A lot is being said around here about the potential for an increased workload if the stimulus package proposed by incoming President Obama is realized - there have been many meetings among the leadership to discuss what might happen. Unfortunately little information is reaching the lower levels, but everyone expects that there will be much to do. That's a good thing, since it means we aren't likely to face RIFs or furloughs, but it does mean everyone doing more. Our office is at its capacity in terms of personnel - even if we wanted to hire someone there would be no place for him or her to work. My prediction is that all of this anticipation is overblown and that if there is more work, it won't have that much of an impact.

Ask people if they would rather have more work for this pay or no work for no unemployment benefits.

The only complaints are that we who are "in the trenches" aren't getting any information other than vague rumors about new work. From what I understand of the stimulus plan, though, we wouldn't be doing that much (infrastructure work is largely the province of the states and other Federal agencies, not the Corps).

Really? That's changed. My grandfather was in the Corps between WWI and II when they built many dams in California.

I am not sure that anyone is thinking of dams (building or fixing) in terms of the stimulus package. I have heard much more about roads.

Still, there is considerable need for dam work, especially those that might be terrorist targets.

These dams are hydroelectric and are still providing much of California's electricity.
