I'm in a CD of the month club - every month it's somebody's job to make a mix CD and mail it out to the other members. It's a really fun idea, and I'd recommend that just about anybody should start one.

This month's my turn. If anybody's interested:
"Advice and Other Things People Say (Or Don't)"
1. R.E.M. - Life and How to Live It (live version from "And I Feel Fine")
2. Robyn Hitchcock - Uncorrected Personality Traits
3. Wee Hairy Beasties - A Newt Called Tiny
4. The Nields - Shoes: Farewell My Pants
5. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Call Upon the Author
6. Colin Meloy - A Cautionary Song
7. Sara O'Brien & the Honey Babes - Being Weird is Cool
8. Ennio Morricone - Il Buono, Il Bruto, Il Cattivo: Titolo Di Testa
9. Drive-By Truckers - Puttin' People on the Moon
10. Silver Jews - How Can I Love You If You Won't Lie Down
11. Mingus Big Band - Fables of Faubus
12. Split Enz - History Never Repeats
13. They Might Be Giants - In the Middle, In the Middle, In the Middle
14. Robyn Hitchcock - The Bones in the Ground
15. Todd Snider - Conservative Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight White American Males
16. The Cornell Hurd Band - Don't Wipe Your Face on Your Shirt
17. Olu Dara - Your Lips
18. Townes Van Zandt - Flyin' Shoes
19. Taj Mahal - Cakewalk Into Town
20. The Gossip - Listen Up!
21. Rod Stewart - Reason to Believe
22. Eels - Things the Grandchildren Should Know

Very interesting. I produced the CD on which that song originally appeared. My involvement was more financial than creative, but I'm glad you liked it. I'll tell Cornell Hurd to watch for your royalty check.

I first heard of CHB in a similar way, when I got his version of Leavin' Las Vegas in a mix. Then I got "The Bottle Let Me Down", a Bloodshot Records compilation of children's music. These prompted me to buy Song of South Austin and Live at Jovita's. Both of which are very good.

We also have The Bottle Let Me Down! We don't listen to it very often. My kids prefer They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies kids albums.

I'm not a BNL fan. We like the Bottle Let Me Down a lot. More than the TMBG albums from Higglytown Heroes. Not as much as No!

We listen to The Innocence Mission's "Now the Day Is Over" more than everything else put together. Not because we like it better. It's an important part of Frankie's going-to-sleep ritual.

A few of the people behind "Bottle Let Me Down" (well, Kelly Hogan at least) put out a record as Wee Hairy Beasties that is quite good.

The Nields' "All Together Singing in the Kitchen" is fantastic.

Frankie really likes the Bruce Springsteen Seeger Sessions album. He also really seems to like The Clash, but the former feels like he's digging children's music.

I assume you mean "Viva Las Vegas," since Cornell hasn't recorded any Sheryl Crow songs. But it's very cool to know that you've bought both of those CDs. You'll also see my name listed as producer of the "Live At Jovita's" CD, though that's giving me more credit than I really deserve. I must confess that I skipped the Cornell Hurd Band's weekly gig at Jovita's last night (which is just a few blocks from my house). I stayed home and watched the BCS game instead.

Cornell's longtime rub board player was Danny Roy Young, who owned a restaurant called the Texicalli Grille, where I had my WWTBAM viewing parties. Danny died unexpectedly a few months ago and left a big hole in a lot of people's lives. It was amazing how many friends he had. Danny was the inspiration for this song on the "Song of South Austin" CD:
