top o' the mornin'®
A cold wind made the wait at the bus stop and the walk to my office building a chilling proposition this morning. So far this winter has seen very little precipitation but a lot of cold.

We had enough snow here to cover the ground about a tenth of an inch. All the snow is in southeast Kentucky.

They said on The Weather Channel that there is so much lake effect snow this year because the Great Lakes are not yet frozen. They usually are by now.

Lake Erie typically freezes over, which is why Buffalo will usually get buried in December but then be spared for the rest of the season. OTOH, Lake Ontario does not freeze over, so Syracuse keeps getting hit by lake effect right into April and easily wins the contest for the most snow in New York cities, year after year.peacock2121 wrote:They said on The Weather Channel that there is so much lake effect snow this year because the Great Lakes are not yet frozen. I don't know about the other Great Lakes, but I presume they don't freeze over, either. Too big and deep.

Another storm is suppose to start today with 7 more inches of snow on top of the 34 we have already. Our usual season snowfall is around 25 inches. Last time we saw a temp over 32 was 12/10/08 and for the foreseeable future that will continue at least another week.

We have still barely gotten an inch of snow here all season long. it is not often St. Louis can claim to have gotten less cumulative snowfall than either Las Vegas or New Orleans..... and it isn't for a lack of moisture, it just keeps falling as cold rain or freezing rain.....

The "high" yesterday, in Fairbanks, AK, was forty below zero. C or F. Take your pick.

I just got off the phone with the Buffalo District and they were talking about seriously bad weather in their area. I don't know whether it's lake effect snow or what.peacock2121 wrote:They said on The Weather Channel that there is so much lake effect snow this year because the Great Lakes are not yet frozen. That's what I hate about visiting tourist areas off-season. We got run out of the outlet shops in Myrtle Beach at 7pm! Like we were supposed to be rushing home to feed our families rather than stimulate the economy by having them buy pizza while we bought them clothes!kayrharris wrote:We dint get locked up...just kicked out of Starbucks and Cold Stone Creamery. We've got the remnants of yesterday's storm across NY state today, but there are strong winds out of the west. That puts Buffalo right in the crosshairs for Lake Erie lake effect.earendel wrote: I just got off the phone with the Buffalo District and they were talking about seriously bad weather in their area.
