Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/8/09

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Jan 08, 2009 1:44 am

Here is the first Theme Thursday game of the year. As usual, I picked out one of my easier themes to start off with. But be careful to give me the theme I'm looking for, this is a theme game where it may be easy to give a general answer that doesn't cover what I'm specifically looking for.....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for the theme.....

1. Under a blood-red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspaper says, says
Say it's true, it's true...

2. Now I don't mean to bother you but I'm in a mess
There's danger of me losing all of my happiness
For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist
And this you can fix

3. You put a hand on my cheek,
And then you turned your eyes away.
If you don't feel complete,
If I don't take you all of the way then go

4. Well on the way, head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices
Talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him

5. Not about to see your light
But if you wanna find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till your bleeding

6. Sailing down behind the sun,
Waiting for my prince to come.
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again.

7. But you know that I'll forgive you
Just this once, twice, forever
'cos, baby, you could drag me to hell and back
Just as long as we're together

8. No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June

9. Everyone's looking to see if it was you
Everyone wants you to come through
Everyone's hoping it'll all work out
Everyone's waiting they're holding out

10. If you decide someday to stop this little game that you are playin',
I'm gonna tell you all what my heart's been a-dyin' to be sayin'

11. Maximum big surprise your smile is something new
I pull my shirt off and pray,
We're sacred and bound to suffer the heat wave

12. Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine

Spoiler

Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspaper says, says
Say it's true, it's true...

New Year's Day-U2 (self-explanatory)

2. Now I don't mean to bother you but I'm in a mess
There's danger of me losing all of my happiness
For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist
And this you can fix

Cupid-Sam Cooke (Valentine's Day)

3. You put a hand on my cheek,
And then you turned your eyes away.
If you don't feel complete,
If I don't take you all of the way then go

You Got Lucky-Tom Petty (St. Patrick's Day)

4. Well on the way, head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices
Talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him

Fool On The Hill-The Beatles (April Fool's Day)

5. Not about to see your light
But if you wanna find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till your bleeding

Mother-Danzig (Mother's Day)

6. Sailing down behind the sun,
Waiting for my prince to come.
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again.

My Father's Eyes-Eric Clapton (Father's Day)

7. But you know that I'll forgive you
Just this once, twice, forever
'cos, baby, you could drag me to hell and back
Just as long as we're together

Freedom-Wham! (I think...I don't think George did that one solo) (Independence Day)

8. No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June

I Just Called To Say I Love You-Stevie Wonder (What's the connection here???)

9. Everyone's looking to see if it was you
Everyone wants you to come through
Everyone's hoping it'll all work out
Everyone's waiting they're holding out

Workin' For The Weekend--Loverboy (Gotta be Labor Day  )

10. If you decide someday to stop this little game that you are playin',
I'm gonna tell you all what my heart's been a-dyin' to be sayin'

Spooky--Classics IV (Halloween)

11. Maximum big surprise your smile is something new
I pull my shirt off and pray,
We're sacred and bound to suffer the heat wave

IDK--No Clue (Election Day? Thanksgiving? Veteran's Day????)

12. Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine

Joy To The World--Three Dog Night (another Hoyt Axton gem they did!!) (assuming it's Christmas...the carol of the same name but WAY different lyrics)

Theme? 12 songs, 12 months, holidays in each? Except, is there a holiday in August?
After I went and looked at the blank-outs in yesterday's game, I came back and blacked this one out...nice touch...and it's nice to be back...Thanks lb!!!

Expansion on my Theme description
I should have added that while August has no holiday, the song fits because of the "no New Years Day, "no Halloween," "no giving thanks to all the Christmas joy you bring" lyrics." You clever bastard! :)

I never thought I'd miss Billy Mays, but this one seems to be kicking my ass and I don't have the ol' MM fallback to save me...
Here goes; hold your nose! Do lame pomes get JJCP from you, or just BDM?
1. Under a blood-red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspaper says, says
Say it's true, it's true...

New Year's Day, U2 (I've never seen them in concert, but Steve has twice! :P )

2. Now I don't mean to bother you but I'm in a mess
There's danger of me losing all of my happiness
For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist
And this you can fix

Cupid, God help me but all I can think of is Tony Orlando! And I prefer his version! But I know some other guy did it. And if you don't dig Tony I'll have him send you his leftover NutriSystem food. :P

3. You put a hand on my cheek,
And then you turned your eyes away.
If you don't feel complete,
If I don't take you all of the way then go

You Got Lucky, Tom Petty (Saw him with Stevie Nicks, and Steve and Mini-me saw him at Super Bowl XXXXXXXLLLLLLLIIIIIII or whatever the answer to life, the universe, and everything is in Roman numerals...)

4. Well on the way, head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices
Talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him

Beatles? It's not Eleanor Rigby, which is lodged in my brain from the viola part...

5. Not about to see your light
But if you wanna find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till your bleeding

Nope (Looking back on this with a theme in mind, maybe this would be that Eminem "song" about his mother? It looks sick enough...)

6. Sailing down behind the sun,
Waiting for my prince to come.
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again.

Nopers

7. But you know that I'll forgive you
Just this once, twice, forever
'cos, baby, you could drag me to hell and back
Just as long as we're together

Yee Haaaaaaaaaaaaaw! I need to get this CD back from my sister since she's only had it for a year and a half. Freedom, Wham, not to be confused with the far superior Freedom '90 by Georgie Boy, but I was still singing this in the grocery store aisles when it was on. I wonder why my kids hate to shop with me even though they bitch if I don't get all the stuff they want...?

8. No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June

I Just Called, Stevie Wonder

9. Everyone's looking to see if it was you
Everyone wants you to come through
Everyone's hoping it'll all work out
Everyone's waiting they're holding out

Working for the Weekend, Loverboy, who I think I saw in concert but maybe not in their 80's heyday but one of those has-been free deals during a festival

10. If you decide someday to stop this little game that you are playin',
I'm gonna tell you all what my heart's been a-dyin' to be sayin'

Familiar.

11. Maximum big surprise your smile is something new
I pull my shirt off and pray,
We're sacred and bound to suffer the heat wave

Nope

12. Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine

Joy to the World, Three Dog Night.

So the first one is a January holiday and the second refers to my birthday which is in February and there are 12 songs and you are into dates and stuff. Ergo, I'm supposing the theme is holidays or at the very least calendar events. I can reconcile that well enough with my few answers.
Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgment, the manner in which information is collected and used.

7. But you know that I'll forgive you
Just this once, twice, forever
'cos, baby, you could drag me to hell and back
Just as long as we're together
Spoiler
Freedom - George Michael. I could have used HIM instead of Larry Craig yesterday.
8. No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June
Spoiler
I Just Called to Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder. I have no idea what this has to do with August, but this crap is unmistakable. Huh. The spell check says there's only one 'e' in unmistakable. Who knew?
9. Everyone's looking to see if it was you
Everyone wants you to come through
Everyone's hoping it'll all work out
Everyone's waiting they're holding out
Spoiler
Working for the Weekend - Loverboy I'm so freaking dense. I kept thinking about Labor Day Weekend and thinking this was some lame reference to that particular weekend. I completely overlooked Working --> Labor. Duh.
10. If you decide someday to stop this little game that you are playin',
I'm gonna tell you all what my heart's been a-dyin' to be sayin'
Spoiler
Spooky - Classics IV If you ever do this particular theme again, there's a really great song by the Nields called "Just Like Christopher Columbus". On the other hand, there probably aren't a thousand people in the world who know that song, so never mind.
11. Maximum big surprise your smile is something new

We're sacred and bound to suffer the heat wave

I was thinking that it was just songs that have something to do with months. Now I'm realizing that it's more than that, it's holidays within the months. So my joke answers are a bit off, but I don't feel like changing them.

TLITF sez:
New Year's Day - U2. It's by far their best song

Their early stuff was so fantastic, but I heard they're threatening a "new sound" for their next album. Gah.

For some reason, my favorite is the bouncing lilt of I Trip Through Your Wires. But Boy and War and Joshua and Red Rocks are just packed with greatness...

I know one, so I'm going to play, no matter how much I regret this later, and no matter how miffed Marley gets when I challenge him for last place.

The song is Joy to the World, performed by Three Dog Night and written by Hoyt Axton.

Since I don't know any of the other songs, one or more of them very well might be written or sung by Mae Axton, Jimmy Webb, Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, etc., so I will guess that the theme is Songs with an Oklahoma Connection.

DUH!!!
I think I finally understand August! The whole song is about there being nothing to celebrate and calling for no reason.

We need to invent a holiday for August now. It's as hot as hell, so it should involve Hell Kitty!

Y'all can borrow Colorado Day since we're not using it -- used to be first Monday in August because we became a state on August 1, 1876. Then the legislature swapped it for MLK Day in 1985.

Wish Grant woulda stepped it up a little and named us a state on July 4, 1876 instead. Oh well.

Double Duh! lb is just too clever for me.

El Paso County kept Colorado Day until 1989. It was one of those actual holidays, like Veteran's Day, where August 1st was the day off no matter where it fell.
