Jacqui Gillis, a student at Bemidji State University in Minnesota, enters the Hot Seat on Thursday.
http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/articles/ ... ction=news
Gillis auditioned for the show last summer in Detroit.
“Me and my mom drove up to Detroit,” she said.
Looks like she was one of the auditioners that Kazoo didn't want to compete against.
http://www.jconline.com/article/20090107/NEWS/901070306
But she said her heart still belongs to Purdue. She spent her freshman year at Purdue, but left when she couldn't secure a co-signer for a school loan.
"I went on the 'Millionaire' show hoping to win enough money to come back to Purdue," she said. "I had to transfer to a less expensive school.
"I would like to be a Boilermaker again. All my friends at Purdue are excited I'm on the show."
The needy student angle with a cute, new "Boilermaker" hook!
A self-described "trivia geek," she said being on the "Millionaire" show was the dream of a lifetime.
"I'd be representing all of the teens out there who like nerdy things," she said.
This article has a picture of Jacqui in the Hot Seat. It might not surprise you that she does not look anything like the "nerdy" stereotype.

Purdue expensive? Ah, she's from Illinois. That out-of-state tuition will get you.
But now she's going to Bemidji State in Minnesota. Hmmm. Looks like they charge about the same for in and out of state students.

Why is trivia nerdy?? I seriously don't get that. I've loved trivia and watched Jeopardy! forever and I still managed to be in "the popular crowd" in high school. I'm also rumored to be incredibly good looking but that's already been long known

. Nerdy are the people who spend all their time at Quiz Bowl or the Math Club and don't have a social life. Trivia is a hobby for me just like hockey. I'm assuming that Ms. Gillis has a social life as do I, Ms. Meisha and many other young people who like trivia. Don't pigeonhole us because we're not as nerdy as you

Fine, Clem, you're attractive and popular, with an active social life, and you also happen to like trivia. What bothers me is that we see young people like you and Jacqui claim the "nerd" label on SyndieBAM, while those of us who are the
real nerds, who don't have the charming personalities and whirlwind social lives, never have a chance of getting past the APs to sit in the Hot Seat.
They can't deal with a real nerd!

Oh, nerds on TV always look hotter than nerds in real life. TV and movies also think that the only thing it needs to do to make pretty girls ugly is to give them glasses and frizzy hair.
What really steams me is when the hero asks her, "Do you really need to wear those?" And she says, "Oh, I guess not," and whips them off.

Right.
I want to see (to be!) a real nerd on SyndieBAM, not WE/WE's performing in the role of nerds.

Much as I'd like to blame you for that, Bob, the MDB contest was doomed when AOL restructured their business plan and decided there was no benefit to sponsoring the AIM ATA anymore. That lifeline disappeared without a single official word of eulogy.
Not that TPTB is promoting anything more
competitive with their new sponsors than their $1,000 sweepstakes.

No, you took offense at the label. But Jacqui did claim it in the article I linked to. And we've seen other contestants claim it on the show. Without fail, such contestants do not fit the nerd stereotype. That's because we true nerds make the APs cringe with revulsion.

Are we having a "thing"?
Clem may be engaging in this discussion because the nerd label might threaten his vanity. I'm doing so because it's part and parcel of a serious issue, all wrapped up in my great obsession, as you well know.

That doesn't bother me. Contestants are instructed not to reveal how they did. How else should they answer?

It didn't bother me either; I just noticed the striking similarity to the mantra from the show's producers that frogman talked about a few months ago.

not even close to a thing.
You will be having a thing if you nit-pick at each other for the next month or so, one of you jumping on something the other says that may not even warrant said jumping and then the other being pissy about whatever was said. It is a back and forth thing about nothing much, with one of you trying to get one up on the other.
Recess boy stuff.
