Tan-I was rereading Capstick just now and your trip crossed my mind-
Did you do a hunting safari or was it the tourist thing?
I am guessing you have read some Capstick? He also wrote a hagiographic biography of Meinertzhagen(WW1 in Africa guy)-I like the topic-but the book left me wanting more.

Not so big on the hunting aspect unless a camera counts! As a result, although I have heard of it, I have not read any of Capstick's work.
Nowadays hunting safaris are far less common in Botswana and Zambia. Perhaps they still occur in Zimbabwe since they are likely desperate for any source of revenue there at the moment. Kenya used to have them as well.
My travels this last trip in Zambia and Botswana were strictly photographic safaris and hunting and obviously poaching are actively discouraged by the Botswana army, which maintains a constant presence in the area, so as not to adversely impact the local game. The area was once wall known for hunting of course back in his day. It has taken many years but the animals are again fairly acclimated to game vehicles. It wouldn't be much sport to go hunting when the animals don't give you a second thought despite driving right up to them with the cameras clicking and the tourists babbling!
