So says Prof. Panarin, leading Russian thinker, who has been predicting apocalypse 2010 for the United States for 10 years or so, but whose ideas are being given heavy rotation in the Kremlin-controlled media, at this point.

At least she will be able to see them coming from her front porch...

I saw the article and was gonna post it, but my computer chose that moment to bounce me.

I will say -- it won't happen. Not when the guy says it will, anyway. Maybe 50 years down the road, but long after he's dead and buried.

There actually has been a fair amount of work here in North America on political realignment, (aside from the never-ending discussion about Quebec vs. Canada), the most interesting of which had stuff like "Ecotopia" on the West Coast. I agree with Sprots that the centrifugal forces, except in Quebec, are not in fact that strong compared to the ties which bind, though.

And, as far as Russkies go, I have to remind about the now-forgotten tome by Andrei Amalrik:

"Will the Soviet Union Survive Until 1984?".

I think he said "No", and he was only off by five years, but nobody references him now.

I didn't read it, but I remember noticing that book in my high school library.

And I'm sure that history is what has inspired Prof. Panarin to come up with this "it's their turn" fantasy.

His map looks like a RISK game board...

I'll mass my armies in Kamchatka and attack Alaska, then down to the Western US, then the Eastern US, then Quebec, Northwest Territory, and Greenland.

The was actually a big proponent of Texas secession who ran for the U.S. Senate. He got over 225,000 votes in the primary (but that might have been votes against incumbent John Cornyn for the Republican nomination rather than for the secessionist).

I really like globalization of business, education, sports, and on and on. It's almost to the point where you can't attack anybody without killing a close relative of someone in your country. The more we globalize, the more that's true. There are still notable exceptions, but less and less.
