Winter 2009 Lyrically Speaking Extravaganza Official Rules
Posted: Fri Jan 02, 2009 8:43 am
You may not have heard anything about it, but everyone's favorite game Lyrically Speaking is ready to return to the Bored for another glorious run all winter long! The LS staff would like to take this time to thank The Director of Promos for all of the wonderful skits that were created to promote the game, as well as the many Bored actors who made them possible, especially that world famous thespian Uly, who will be sure to thank us when he wins his first Oscar®, Golden Globe, and Razzie....
If you played in last year's Winter LS, you may notice there will be a few tweaks to the game this time around. Being as this is as LB production, it requires a lengthy rules post outlining the many convoluted quirks, bylaws, and unwritten codes that will be enforced during this game.... OK, actually the rules aren't really complicated at all, it's just that I tend to drag rules posts out forever and ever by not being able to shut up about them. Speaking of, it's time to get down to business....
Dates: The 2009 Winter Lyrically Speaking Extravaganza will run for 10 weeks this time around, with the first game posted on January 5th, and the final game being posted on Friday the 13th of March.
Posting Times: There will be a game every Monday through Friday during the 10 weeks in that period. The games should be up sometime before 8:00 AM CST, barring any eventual computer problems I will likely be plagued with over the next 10 weeks. The Monday through Thursday games will close the following morning at the precise time I put up the answers post, which will be no earlier than 7:00 AM CST. Friday games will be open all weekend and close the following Monday morning when the answers are posted (Again, no earlier than 7:00 AM CST).
Procedure: I will give a set of lyrics that are pulled from certain songs. You are to provide me with the title of each song, and the artist who performed it. Outside sources are NOT allowed, you may only use what knowledge you have in your head. Please post your answers as a reply in the game thread, and spoilerize them using one of the two Spoiler options this Bored has.
Scoring: I will be retaining the 1 point scoring system I used last year since I liked the way it worked better than the traditional 5 point scale. For each set of lyrics posted, the correct title and artist for each song will be worth 1 point each. Bonuses will be sprinkled in throughout the game as I see fit to add them, and scoring for them will be specified in those games. There is no penalty for wrong answers, no matter how stupid they are, so feel free to SWAG away.
Format: For the most part, I will use the same 5-day format that I have used in my past two LS runs, though this year's game will be slightly different. Each weekday's games will run as follows:
Retro Mondays - Match Game Monday takes a hiatus this time around (There will be a few sprinkled in though, so don't worry), and in its place is Retro Monday. Just as The Best of Carson used to run on Mondays, the Best... er, what would pass as the Best of Beast will run on Mondays this month. Each Monday I will post one of my games verbatim from one of my past LS Meisterships (Which were in October 2002, March 2003, November 10-14 2003, December 2004, and the 2008 Winter LS). Just for grins, I will also post the actual scoring from the game when it was first run (Adjusted for the new 1 point format). Yes, I blatantly stole this idea from Fanny. I am shameless....
Tuesday Wordplay - You know it, you love it. Tuesday Wordplay games feature songs which all have a certain word in common. There is no bonus points for knowing the magic word, but it may help you figure out some of the other songs.
Wacky Wednesday® - Everyone's favorite LS day, and an LB Bored Game Tradition it's the day I always turn over the reigns to one of my vast array of Merry Men. The Wednesday games will all be themed somehow around that MM's personality, and the theme will usually be outlined in the introduction.
Theme Thursday - Theme Thursday games will obviously be set up around some common theme, though it will be up to you to figure out what that theme is. The theme will involve the songs included somehow, whether it be some reference in the titles, artists, posted lyrics, or something about the songs themselves... or any combination of those! Correctly guessing the theme will net you three points.
Free For All Friday - The name stays the same, but the format slightly changes. No longer will FFAF simply be a collection of songs I heard on one of my wide variety of Music Choice® channels. Instead, Free For All Friday games can be about...... well, anything I want! You never know what will show up on Fridays, but the games will usually be longer than on the other four days, and will of course be open during all of that weekend.
New for 2009..... J.J. CALE POINTS!:
In honor of the man who made last year's LS so much fun, the '09 LS will feature J.J. Cale points, which will be awarded to anyone for anything during the game that amuses me (And I am pretty easily amused, as you might have guessed). This is a bold step for me, as I have never been one to award humor points or any non-game points of any kind during any of the games I've ever hosted (It's the fairness hangup I have). Well, no more. I want this year's game to be as much, heck, even more fun than last year's.... so I will reward those who intentionally or even unintentionally make me laugh. Each player can earn a maximum of 3 (three) JJC points per game. These will be awarded solely at my discretion, and will count towards your overall score. You never know what may tickle me (TBone answering Eric Heatherly for "Flowers on the Wall" last year would've got him the 3 point max right there due to my memories of vintage Mecca TV, as would have Fanny's answer of Shithouse Rats, slamming one of my least favorite bands of all time), and obviously the more you run off at the mouth, the better your chances of accumulating points. I love reading everyone's stray comments when answering games, so anything I can do to encourage that, I will....
And now some miscellaneous notes copied from last year's rules....
I will try not to be too strict on scoring song titles, but you have to have the gist of the title in your answer to receive credit. As far as artists go, I will try to accept artists who did a popular cover version of a certain song if you did not name the artist I had in mind, but I am not going to comb through lyrics sites looking for every artist who has ever done a certain song. That being said, there are certainly some versions of songs that, while popular in their day, I may not be aware of. So if I count your artist wrong and you think it should be acceptable, don't be afraid to say something. In fact, if you think I have messed up anywhere in any game, don't be afraid to let me have it. I won't cry too much.
I do not guarantee the accuracy of the lyrics I post as I do not have the time to check multiple sites nor anywhere close to the background knowledge of music others have to be able to necessarily spot a poorly transcribed lyric. But do let me know if you think something isn't right. If I mess up a lyric too badly, I will throw that song out... but if it's just a debatable word or two that shouldn't affect the ability of someone who knew the song to recognize the lyric, it will remain in play.
I do use the Phil Collins rule, which basically states that I will accept an answer of the lead singer of a band for a song that was actually done by that band, so long as (1) You name the person actually singing the song, and (2) That person had a successful enough solo career as to cause confusion as to whcih songs they did solo and which as a group. For example, if the song in question is "Hotel California", answering Don Henley would be acceptable. Answering Glenn Fry would not. Answering The Eagles for "Dirty Laundry" would also not be accepted.
I'm sure there are other rules I am forgetting (There always is), but this looks good enough for now.
As with all of my Bored games, there are two main purposes..... to learn something and to have fun... in no particular order. I learn something everytime I run a game here, and I hope you do too. And I rarely don't have a blast hosting one of these things.... and the LS crowd is always the most fun to work with....
See you all Monday morning, bright and early!
