Have you ever gone to Times Square on New Year's

My ex and I had planned on two separate occasions to get down to Times Square for New Year's Eve. But, alas, we never got there for one reason or another. Have you ever been among the throng?
Lady G and I did, however, join the mass of people one year on The Strip in Vegas. She vowed never to do it again - and, we didn't. But, it was a blast - at least I thought so. Lady G is not fond of huge crowds like that.

I would like to go some day.
The girls were watching Kathy and Anderson last night. They were showing covereage of a 4 mile race that starts at midnight. That looks interesting.

We lived in NYC for 14 years. We never did it. Never wanted to. It's the kind of crowd that can be very scary. We attended one of the Yankee's parades in "Canyon of Heroes" and I was literally picked up off my feet when the crowd surged. Not comfortable for me. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade was nerve wracking enough -- and we went to that 6 times.

Almost...several years ago I had a long layover in NYC on the 31st. We worked the red-eye out to LAX that night, and left the hotel (in Times Square) just a few hours before the ball dropped. The whole scene was crazy and electric! I'd love to do it properly one day...but maybe in a fab hotel suite with a great view of the ball instead.

I've been to NYC on NYE before as well. I would not ever get in that crowd.
I think the last NYE I was there, we took the train to Long Island and saw Frank Tangredi star
in Barefoot in the Park.

I have never been in Times Square on New Year's Eve, but I have an inkling what it must be like.
One evening, just over eight years ago, a certain unnamed BB (who now lives in Idaho and is a power player in the sewage business, if you know what I mean) decided that a small group of us should travel south on a Manhattan street than was crammed shoulder to shoulder with an enormous crowd of people surging north as they watched a parade that celebrated some festivity of great importance, although we never knew exactly what that importance might be.
I gained enormous respect for salmon.

If it was October of 2000, it was probably a World Series parade....

Nope. It appeared to have some connection to a religious commemoration that is revered by people for whom English is a second language, if that.
Sure, I realize that could describe the World Series parade, too, but in this case, it doesn't.

Ms. 63 and I tried, once, in 1996-97. We had tickets to an off-Broadway show for New Year's Eve and planned to join the crowd after the show. I didn't realize that they block off access many hours before midnight. I'd give it another try, with much better planning, but Ms. 63 doesn't care for crowds either. Maybe someday with Sparky. --Bob

One year -- it has to be 28-30 years ago -- a bunch of us went to Times Square for New Year's Eve.
Very crowded but we had fun.
Around 1 a.m., we took the train back to Philadelphia. Using a friend's house in South Philadelphia as a base, we napped, then went over to Broad Street and watched part of the annual Mummers Parade.
We were all MUCH younger then.

Living 40 miles away from NYC (I know, Im a WE/WE, get over it), you'd think I've done it at least once in my life. Alas, no such luck. Many folks I know work on NYE (police/fire) and tell you to stay as far away as possible!
I'd like to go at least ONCE (the bucket list in tow), but not when it was 2 degree wind chill like last night.
Where do those people go to pee anyway?

Speaking of Vegas, did anyone catch the jump on a motorcycle by Robbie Maddison and another guy who tried to flip a truck over something (aired on ESPN- live I believe)?
Made for interesting watching after midnight.

A crowd like that would make me majorly heeby-jeebed. Do they still weld down the manhole covers?

No, thank you. And I have no regrets about it.

I think I saw a row of portapotties stuck a little bit away from the festivities in an accidental broadcast. It may have been something else.
Maybe someone who's actually been there can tell us.

I have never done it and the way things are now, I probably never will. Security procedures have people arrive like over six hours in advance, no bags or anything allowed, and no opportunity to go to the john until after midnight. Plus some years like this one it is like zero wind chill. No hot beverages because you can't go to the..., well you know.
One year like in the mid-90s, I actually went to a LIRR train station with thoughts of going to the city and seeing it from a distance, but abandoned the idea when the train was too crowded and passed without stopping.

I just remembered that for Y2K I was in Times Square in the late morning when they counted down to midnight for places like Japan and China.

I also had CNN on last night. Kathy and Anderson were a fascinating duo. They seem like such a mismatch, but their commentary was mostly enjoyable.
Kathy Griffin is all over YouTube thanks to her response to a heckler caught live. I get the impression Kathy is not a fan of the Jonas Brothers. She said it was so cold it would freeze their promise rings and make them break off.

I've been to Times Square on New Year's Eve (or close to it; it was too crowded to get into the actual square). It was 2001/2002. After 9/11, my wife and I wanted to do something for NYC so we decided to spend our vacation dollars there. Security was tight everywhere but we had a great time. I highly recommend NYC as a vacation destination.

I lived in New York City from September 1992 through April 1993. We did go to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in '92. We got a position close to 57th Street, so we could just see Columbus Circle from where we were.
We also went down to Times Square on New Year's Eve, but we didn't stay long. Neither of us felt like standing in one place, packed like sardines, just to watch the ball drop. So we saw the ball, and we left at 10:30. We caught the subway back to our apartment off 207th Street and watched it drop on TV. The thing about that New Year's Eve was that it was probably the warmest night of the entire winter. It was 55 degrees at midnight, which still ranks in the top three temperatures recorded at a ball dropping.

Pealette went one year. I think she was maybe 19 or 20 at the time. She went with 3 friends. She is glad she did it and will never do it again. She said it looks more fun on TV than it is in reality.
She also said there were not nearly as many drunks as she thought there would have been.
