And what did you do...

.. for New Year's? Did you stay at home, attend a party / get-together, take your significant other out someplace or? We were invited to a party / get-together hosted by someone in Lady G's Bible study group. So, we went and had a good time. No heavy drinking but the host had a pool table and air hockey table which we gathered round most of the evening. There were about 30 couples, each of who brought something to eat - so a buffet was on the menu. I did not know a sould but the people were generally very friendly and outgoing so I suspect we will be mingling with them again in the future.

Attended a Rose Bowl media party. It was at the ESPN Zone next to the Staples Center in downtown LA. All the food and booze I could fit in my camera bag. The arcade games were free so I shot baskets, mini bowled (no, I didn't use mini as a ball), played air hockey (better than the Ducks and Kings), smashed up a Ferrari dozens of times and generally wreaked havoc with other games. There were football games on tv but I fell asleep during the Sun Bowl and got tired of the LSU-GT game.

You'll be attending the game? Should we watch for you on the sidelines?

I am waiting for a friend as I type this. We will head to the game and check out some early tailgaters. Well, some have camped overnight in their motorhomes. I will be at the game. I will be wearing a white polo. Underneath I will have a long sleeved red shirt. I will have my customary head of greying hair. I will have cameras. I will have my photo taken with the song girls. I will wave at the ABC camera and talk football with Ivan Meisel.

One of my fellow teachers and I were invited to a NYE party at a local hotel. I've usually either celebrated at friend's home, or hosted my own party, and have never attended an event such as this. Most of the attendees were American Airlines employees, as a couple of members of the opening band were AA employees in their day jobs. We had a ball! Good food, three bands (no waiting!), and lots of dancing. I'm not sure I'd do this every year, but I'm glad I went this time.

Will you be hobnobbing with the squirrel mascot from the State Farm commercials?

My son and I went to 6:00 p.m. Mass and got to sing all those Sister Act Mary songs as well as "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing." Then we went to our neighbors' house across the street, where my husband met us at 8:30 because he had to work from 7a to 7p. The most popular item on the menu was homemade chicken rice soup, as most of us were sick. We played a board (without the board) game called Apples to Apples, which was quite fun and doesn't have a lot of rules. We counted down at midnight, kissed and hugged, and came home. We sure know how to live it up, don't we?

Saturday we go to the TSO concert.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Love,

We picked up Kennbec (escape artist doggie) at a friend's house because he's off saving lives and property today. Actually, he's on the rescue truck so more likely is ferrying broken bones to the hospital. Anyway, we had dinner and played Sequence until about 10, then home to watch the Times Square festivities and wish everybody in chat a Happy New Year and asleep by 12:30.

We had a small get together with family and friends at a local restaurant. We had the
bar area to ourselves. There was a really nice buffet, lots of good food and desserts, some live music
and dancing and ensuing silliness. By the end of the night, half the group was behind the bar mixing the
drinks. (it's a good thing we know the owners) I, of course, was behaving myself.

Check out these two links for drinks ladies seem to love and you can just shake with ice and pour into
a martini glass. The bottles are pretty too, which is essential in my book. :)

I slept or read for most of the evening. It's really pathetic, I know.

Jeff's grandmother's twin sister died at 2:15 a.m. She lived long enough into the New Year to collect another month of Social Security and create another tax return. After Jeff's grandmother's funeral, June asked her daughter why Jean didn't talk to her all day, so this death wasn't unexpected.

She was the last of the great-grandparents. It's kind of sad, because this means that the next generation (Jeff's parents, my mom, etc) is going to start to go. After them, then it's us.

We went to a local restaurant with friends early in the evening and then came back to our house for some mean rounds of our version of Mexican Train w/ Dominoes. As usual the little one kicked our butts, winning 6 out of the 7 games and only having 11 points during the one game she lost. Good girl!

I went into chat for a bit right around 11:45 or so. In addition to wishing the people there a happy new year, I wanted to find out what happened to Dick Clark. We didn't watch the countdown last year and didn't see it the 3 years before that due to being away. I had no idea he had a stroke during that time. After reading up on what happened and hearing the responses in chat, I'm very happy he has made so much progress. It really touched me when he kissed Mrs. Clark at midnight and said, "One more time" in reference to doing the show.

Happy New Year!

We saw Slumdog Millionaire last night. Outstanding! Even my normal, non-game-show-addicted wife liked it.

The boys (Big J, and my younger step-grandson who is 4 days younger than Big J )played video games, and Magic the Gathering, I watched Anne of Green Gables, part II.

We put the TV on CNN and watched Kathy and Anderson for the countdown, and toasted with sparkling fruit juice spritzers. We wore (yes indeedy, teenage boys) Sparkly New Years Tiaras, and blew horns at midnight.

Then I made them go to bed. They talked for about an hour, so I made one of them change rooms, and I slept on the couch.

We had an extremely quiet evening. Neither of us has been feeling particiularly great over the last couple of days, so it worked out well.

Earlier, I played with the Sansa Fuze I got for Christmas. I have 60 free days of Rhapsody with it, so I spent hours dowloadng all sorts of music.

It's a very eclectic mix -- ranging from Bix Beiderbecke's version of I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover (in anticipation of the Mummers parade today) to Bette Midler, Wynonnie Harris, Springsteen, and the Flamingos.

I need to find a downloadable copy of Wynonnie Harris' Grandma Plays the Numbers, so I can play it for TLAF.

We stayed up long enough to watch the ball fall at Times Square, turned on whichever That's Entertainment was on Turner Classics and fell asleep in the LR.

We didn't head to the Mummers Parade today -- my hip won't take the cold but we are looking for next year's.

I do believe that Snaxx is attending his first Mummers Parade. I told him a good spot to watch the parade -- near the University of the Arts. The students have a blast and it's on of the performance areas before the judging area at City Hall.

I'm sorry for your family's loss.

We, too, have one remaining survivor from that generation, my 98-year-old Great Aunt Ruth. Fortunately, I'm not aware of any ominous precursors (other than her sheer age, of course) and at the funeral of her younger sister last spring (my Grandma Florie), she expressed much pluck and determination. So I fully expect to celebrate her 100th birthday in 2010. --Bob

As wH Auden said>>>The only way to spend New Year's Eve is either quietly with friends or in a brothel. <<<

And hint, hint-I did not spend it quietly with friends.
Spoiler
I spent it quietly with family-besides MRS S and I met 20 years ago at a NYE Party
