WWTBAM Bored

I've successfully dirtied three large pans. So I began assembling the split pea soup stuff. I shoved 800 pounds of celery, 800 pounds of carrots and 800 pounds of onions into the first pan and realized that it wouldn't quite do. So, I poured that mess into the next same-depth only wider pan. I added the garlic, chopped up ham and two bags of split peas. I then added 6 cups of the 20 cups of water. Saying to myself, "Shit. That ain't workin'." I poured that glop into a taller, more cylindrical pot and added the rest of the water and proceeded to boil it. Realizing that it's hard to stir a 6 foot deep pan.

So, I exaggerate.

So, I poured THAT goop into a bigger Dutch oven and voila! It fits and it's bubbling away. The initial top of the boiling soup looked just like those toxic waste bubbly films on a green reservoir or algae-ridden lake. Quite appetizing.

It smells heavenly.

And, we got our fence fixed! It's done! The 1/4 of the fence that the insurance company paid for looks stunning! While the rest looks like wraiths might have built it. We have a large fence. Big ol' fence. Perhaps the next storm will wreck the rest and we'll have matching slats.

Anyway, from the curb we look mahvelous.

Potatoes would be wrong. Then it would be potato/pea soup. Too much mush.

No kidding. I've made lentil soup, too, and it's very tasty. We just didn't have any lentils and I don't know why, because I remember seeing them in the pantry. Maybe they got mothy before the hurricane and we tossed'em.

My two most favorite soups of all. I alternate between lentil and split pea as my fave.

I leave out the ham, I like it vegetarian style.

Now that's something I've never tried to make! I guess I like Progresso's well enough to just eat that. I occasionally get all ruthless on the pantry and then can't find stuff for weeks....

I need to consider making beef barley soup. I like making soup on cold days. Yummmmmm.

I really like it with or without the ham. It just needs the flavoring and a little bit of fat. However, bouillon works just fine. I would have made it without the ham if I hadn't had any, since it's not really a meat soup thingie.

Cool! We like new trees! I can be a tree-member by marriage. Not only does he put beer in it, it's the only liquid, other than tomato sauce/paste, onions, etc. The chili ends up very thick and almost like a bbcue sandwich if you add mesa. It's so good topped with a dollop of sour cream it should be on a menu somewhere.

Me? I drink beer with chili, especially if someone else makes it.

Not a big fan of beer. I meant the little white barley thingies that make soup taste horrible.

I do enjoy chili flavored with beer.

I did a taste test once, the beer chili won.

I've switched from split pea soup to lentil soup. Almost exactly the same ingredients except I throw
in a little white wine and it cooks in no time. I know feeding two boys will definitely increase the
grocery bill for their stay. Good luck!

What I like about lentil soup is how when you put the leftovers in the fridge and then take them out later, there is more in there than there was when you put it away.
