They have separate drama and comedy categories:
Best Comedy/Musical: Burn After Reading, Happy-Go-Lucky, In Bruges, Mamma Mia, Vicki Cristina Barcelona.
Best Drama: Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, Revolutionary Road, Slumdog Millionaire, The Visitor
Best Actor (Drama): Leonardo DiCaprio, Frank Langella, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Mickey Rourke
Best Actress (Drama): Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Kristin Scott Thomas
Best Actor (Comedy): Javier Bardem, Colin Farrell, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson, Dustin Hoffman
Best Actress (Comedy): Rebecca Hall, Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson
Best Supporting Actor: Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Ralph Fiennes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Heath Ledger.
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, Penelope Cruz, Viola Davis, Marisa Tomei, Kate Winslet
Best Director: Danny Boyle, Stephen Daldry, David Fincher, Ron Howard, Sam Mendes
Having the separate categories for drama and comedy (although only one category for directors and supporting actors) explains some of the selections here. However, putting Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. in the supporting actor category for Tropic Thunder while excluding Josh Brolin (as well as the total snub of Milk for Best Picture and Director) is very strange. Keep in mind that unlike the Oscars, which have thousands of voters, the Golden Globes are limited to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whose numbers total less than 100, many of whom maintain tenuous relations to the entertainment industry (or journalism as a whole), and are only in this for the freebies the studios lavish on them.
Last year, the Golden Globes were a casualty of the Writer's Strike, but they should be back to their usual lavish shindig this year (they have TV awards as well as the movies).
