The National Board of Review named "Slumdog Millionaire" the best film of the year. The question is, do I wait for it to come to a theater close to me, or do I make the trek out to the Plano Angelika to see it?

And as a side note, Clint Eastwood was named best actor for "Gran Torino." I saw a trailer for this last weekend in front of "Changeling" (which I liked a lot even though the story's focus shifted in a couple of places during its running time), and it looks good. Eastwood has really perfected his skills as a filmmaker in his latter years.

I never knew there was more than one Angelika. That's where I'd have to go to see it in this area.

We have two Angelika Film Centers in this area. I've been to the Dallas one a few times, but I have never been to the one in Plano. And oddly enough "Slumdog Millionaire" is only playing at the one in Plano.

The National Board of Review is known for some off-the-wall picks over the years. However, conventional wisdom is that Slumdog is one of the favorites for the Best Picture Oscar right now. Clint has been mentioned several places for Best Actor, as has Anne Hathaway for Best Actress (she won the NBR award). The Academy loves Clint, but I think that Sean Penn (Milk) and Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) are the Best Actor favorites right now, as are their pictures.

There is also a pretty good chance that either The Dark Knight or Wall-E (probably not both though) could get a Best Picture nomination. Heath Ledger is probably a heavy favorite for Best Supporting Actor (he would be the first posthumous Oscar winner since Peter Finch in Network). Josh Brolin got the Supporting Actor awared from the NBR for Milk, and he could well get two nominations this year (for W as Best Actor). There is strong sentiment that he was slighted last year for solid performances in several films, and this could be a makeup year for him. He has definitely out-Traoltaed John Travolta in the category of rescuing one's career from the ashes.

Frank Langella is a big favorite of mine, and I saw him in a short Frost/Nixon clip recently. If he's as good in the rest of it as he is in that clip, he should win. I know it doesn't work that way, though. I think it was Katharine Hepburn who said you never win for your best work.

A movie that wasn't so hot (Sphinx) made me a Langella fan -- I thought he saved that one from the ashes.

I hope he's nominated and wins.

There's an Angelika in Houston as well.
