Lyrically Speaking Day 17 - 12/3/08

Yesterday's game will remain open until Noon Eastern, as usual, but today's game will be open until FRIDAY at noon, for reasons to be explained in a moment.
Today's game is the last Match-'Em-Up of this cycle. I'll say this much: it's a little tougher than the others, and as a result, I'm giving you an extra day to mull it over before posting your answers. As a hint, I'll tell you that if you trot out an obscure cover for a song rather than the most popular (and I THINK the original, but I've been wrong about that before *cough*otis redding "hard to handle"*cough*), you could be SOL.
So, give me the title and artist for the songs below, then put them together to make FIVE TRIPLETS based on a connection that you will need to discover for yourself. One point for the artist, one for the title, and TWO points for each triplet you come up with.
1. They knew all the right people
They took all the right pills
They threw outrageous parties
They paid heavenly bills
2. Baby I got your number
And I know that you got mine
But you know that I called you
I called too many times
You can call me baby
You can call me anytime
3. We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
4. The real thing don't do the trick, no
You better think up something quick
You're gonna burn burn burn burn burn it to the wick
5. Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
Ten years burnin' down the road
No where to run, ain't got nowhere to go
6. Ooh, ooh, you might not ever get rich
But let me tell ya, it's better than diggin' a ditch
There ain't no tellin' who you might meet
A movie star or maybe even a Indian Chief
7. (SONG TITLE) don't bother to choose
If it's jug-band music or rhythm and blues
Just go and listen, it'll start with a smile
It won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try
8. Einstein, James Dean
Brooklyn's got a winning team
Davy Crockett, Peter Pan
Elvis Presley, Disneyland
9. You stand in the front, just a-shakin' your ass
I'll take you backstage, you can drink from my glass
I talk about somethin' you can sure understand
'Cause a month on the road, an' I'll be eatin' from your hand
10. I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight
11. Cops in cars, the topless bars
Never saw a woman so alone
So alone, so alone, so alone
Motel money murder madness
Let's change the mood from glad to sadness
Mr. Mojo risin'
12. You are the tear, I have no fear
You are so strange, I feel the same
Sorcerous mind, we ride again
We are not chained to the wheel, to the wheel
13. Well, it may come as a surprise
Loneliness has opened my eyes
I tried every love I could find
Still, I can't get you out of my mind
14. Well, we're big rock singers, we got golden fingers
And we're loved everywhere we go
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
At ten thousand dollars a show
We take all kind of pills to give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill we've never known
15. Color me your color, baby
Color me your car
Color me you color, darling
I know who you are
