If I read correctly, the "new" rules do not say anything about waiting until $1K to earn the ATE.

They do clarify a question we had about the clock, though.

The game clock will begin when the last answer choice is displayed on the Contestant�s monitor. The Contestant cannot answer a question until the game clock begins. Answers will only be accepted when the game clock is running.

So interrupting Meredith while she's reading the choices (and running down the clock) is officially permitted.

And it mostly is, even though nobody we've seen so far this season has been able to avail themselves of their banked time. But the biggest reason TPTB have for saying that it's a "good idea" not to is that might lead to highlighting what a bad idea it was to start the clock while Meredith was reading the answers. When I watched a taping last month, I was able to see the contestant's console. All four answers were revealed simultaneously as Meredith started to read, and that was when the clock started. --Bob

I believe that this specification of the policy is new. The policy itself, of course, is not. Production years last (according to the Rules) from June through December. --Bob
