The H.S. football team I do the public address for triumphed in the MS 5A South State Championship (for the 3rd time in 4 years) by a score of 28-0 and will play this Friday night over at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson for the 5A State Championship. Our opponent is South Panola H. S. (or as they call themselves:
The University of South Panola ). They own the longest current high school winning streak in the nation at 89 games. The USA Today had them ranked number 10 nationally in last weeks poll. 3 teams in that poll lost this past weekend so they may have moved up this week. We will see tomorrow when the poll comes out. Needless to say, they are quite good. They send anywhere from 3 to 6 players to Division One schools every year. This will be the third time in four years that we have played them for the 5A State Championship. I am hoping that the third time is the charm.
My only real wish for the game is a dry field. We have what most all of the MS sportswriters are calling the best H.S. quarterback seen in many years here in MS. We have 5 senior wide receivers that could start for many high schools. (at least 3 will play at the next level) We need them all since we run the spread and all 5 of them are occasionally on the field simultaneously.
South Panola is just the opposite. They pretty much try to line up and ram the ball down your throat. They like to impose their will on you. A wet field would favor them tremendously. We played in a driving rainstorm last Friday to win South State but Oak Grove is a mirror image of us offensively so the effect of the weather was pretty much a wash. (pun intended) Things would be a lot different against those SP monsters.
The two previous times we played them for a State Championship, we were just hoping we could pull a miracle off and beat them. This time most of the people around here think we are going to beat them and stop their long winning streak just short of 90 games. So remember you heard it here first when we take down the number ten team (according to USA Today) in the nation this Friday night.

South Panola is a real powerhouse but they only beat us (Madison Central) by 3 last Friday. I think that's the closest anyone has come to beating them all year long.
South Panola annoys the stew outta me. I hope Meridian creams them.

Yeah Toq, you should have heard the crowd reaction in Ray Stadium when I announced that Madison Central 14 South Panola 10 score. It was only topped when I announced the Egg Bowl score immediately afterward. Y'all played a great game. I know y'all's coach from way back. He used to referee intramural sports back when we were both at Ole Miss. After we graduated, I ran a couple of fund-raising projects a year with him when he was first starting out as a head coach at Raleigh. He has won everywhere he has gone. But I believe Tupelo holds the honor of closest call this year for South Panola. They scored in the fourth quarter to make it 14-13 South Panola and went for a two point conversion to try and win it right then. They failed and the final score was 14-13.

Go, Meridian!
lilclyde, report back to us Friday night, if you can. If you're too busy celebrating, we can wait until Saturday.

If anyone wants to get into some mischief around here, it will be easy to do Friday night. I think three fourths of the town will be over in Jackson if the people who have stopped me in the streets are any indication. There is definitely an air of optimism in town that was missing the first two times we played them. Last time we played for the State Championship, the high school folks got out at noon. I don't know if our new first year superintendent is going to go that route or not. Therefore, I turned in a personal day leave request today.
