I am through painting

We have spent the last three days painting our upstairs bathroom. Friday was priming, after several days earlier in the week filling in wall holes. Cool new plaster putty, which is dark pink in the jar and dries white so you know when it's ready for sanding. The technology started with Glidden ceiling paint several years ago when I worked in the Home Depot paint department.
Saturday was taping the parts we didn't want to paint and applying the first coat. Today was the second coat. I am still exhaling paint fumes. But it is done except for the final cleanup (removal of said tape, picking up the tarp, putting everything back into the bathroom that belongs there, etc.).
GW kept saying that she liked the color. My response was "Good, since you picked it out, and if you want to change it in the next ten years, you're on your own." Have I mentioned recently that I don't like doing home repair?

I like how you can get the tape in a blue color now. It looks like it would make for much easier painting, imo. I happen to like to paint. It has been very therapeutic several times in my life when I unfortunate things have happened.
I am curious about the paint fume situation. Sam and Eric painted Sam's room, and we had painters for the house in Italy, so I haven't been involved in it in quite some time. Do you think that those little masks that go over your mouth and nose would work in keeping out the fumes? I am really sensitive to the fumes now.
What color did GW pick?

Paint makes my skin break out. I get blotchy and itchy. My face swells up as well.
It gets me out of that job.

My guess is that "those little masks" would only be good for keeping out particles, not volatiles so if you are sensitive to oil based paint fumes it was take a pretty elaborate mask to protect you and probably not a good idea to try that.

For somebody who doesn't like home repair, you complete a lot of projects! So, what would you rather be doing, and why don't you?

Yes, the little masks are typically used to keep dust away while sanding and would not protect you from the fumes. There is a product available called a respirator, it works very well and since it has charcoal filters, it totally protects you from the fumes.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure if I donned one of those respirators, Samantha would have the camera out just as fast and the pictures would be all over the place lickety-split!

Just make sure Sam knows to post those pics here first!

They now have "green" paints with no volatile organic compounds that shouldn't prompt any toxic or allergic reactions.

The blue tape is good for large problems, but invariably ends up peeling off some of the newly applied paint on the edges. GW went around this afternoon and did some touchups.
As has been noted, those cheapo dust masks won't work for fumes. You need a full-blown respirator, which will make you look like you're expecting a gas attack. The Depot and Lowe's both sell them. They ain't cheap. And if you're male with a beard, they don't fit tightly enough, either.
The color is Sherwin Williams's Cedar Grove. Tends toward olive, towards the lighter end of the light/dark range.

I do them because I'm a cheap bastard and don't want to pay someone to do them, and also because it is expected of me as a spouse and homeowner. However, they do take me longer than anyone else, they never quite look as good as others might make them, and I don't get a whole lot of satisfaction from knowing that I was the one who did them (only from knowing that they're done and no longer hanging over my head).
I would rather be:
Catching up on my reading
Playing my new Wii video games
Watching numerous DVDs which I've owned for months and have never viewed - Broadway's Lost Treasures, Dick Van Dyke episodes, Season 1 of Night Court, the last two seasons of The West Wing, and others which aren't right in front or me at present
Restarting the selling of my comic book collection and setting up the business for it so I can get tax benefits
Patting my cats
Patting my spouse
Any more questions?

Knowing a little bit about paint......
Yes, there are 'low' VOC paints and they are just as good as other paints except for one area. I would
always recommend a Killz-type paint for any bathroom applications. They are not not VOC as they are oil based. But that is very much the best option for high humidity areas.
And then I would use them in well ventilated areas or use a respirator.

Oh yeah! Killz is nasty in close quarters. Fortunately, earlier layers were of that type, so I'm not worried about other stuff popping up. We attack all surface mildew spots as soon as they show up.
