A good friend of ours just learned his son-in-law and granddaughter are the first confirmed victims of the terrorists in Mumbai. His son-in-law travels there regularly with his work and took his 13 year old daughter for the trip this time.

I am so sorry for the family. I am so sorry for each & every one of the families. Of all nationalities, everywhere.

I have been avoiding these news clips since it started. My Mom gets really upset. We all do, but she's old & frail enough that being upset is really serious business.

On a more personal level, as soon as I saw "Chabad House" on the map as one of the terror sites, I could bet the general public just thought "Chabad" was another Indian word, but I knew it wasn't. The rabbi in the pictures looks like my cousin (who is also a Chasidic rabbi, but a different sect). All the more reason to switch the station when my mother is awake.

And as soon as the Indian strike force went in I knew lots more people who hadn't been killed already would be. I'm not saying they would necessarily have lived if some agency that were better at this had gone in, but there might have been a chance.

I am sure many places of worship are praying for all the victims in India, and all the families and friends of victims, including the church that I serve. I will be praying for you.

I am so sorry that this insanity had to hit anyone so close to one of us -- or anyone anywhere. My condolences go to your friend and his family, Macrae, and to the families of all the victims.

My condolences to the family. The news said they were there on a religious retreat. Did they get that wrong?

I'm putting my comment on your comment in a different thread. Your comment, & my answer, doesn't belong here.

Maybe lots of people thought my comment on trying to keep my Mom from getting bereaved over the news as it came over the wires, & about "so why did they single out the Chabad House" didn't belong here either, I dunno.

Usually when someone posts about a friend's bereavement, we don't all get to see the photos of the dead they speak of, smiling in happier times, all over the front pages of the news. Because it is a private grief. This, for whatever that portends, is not; its very public.

Condolences to your friend and especially to his daughter, whose life has been changed so irrevocably and so senselessly.

The story I read identified the father as working for a mediation organization of some sort. --Bob

I don't know if this is the case but there are many "Chabad Houses" in foreign nations that house volunteers and sometimes paid workers who help people practice Judaism if they so wish. I'm not saying I know that that was the case here but it would be my educated guess.

In this case they were from the Synchronicity Foundation.
