Lyrically Speaking Day 13 - 11/26/08
Posted: Wed Nov 26, 2008 5:16 am
Two quick notes before today's game.
1. Yesterday's game will remain open until noon today.
2. There will be no game tomorrow (HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!), but we will return Friday.
As for today, though....Today, we're going south of the Mason-Dixon line. No, not country (although there's at least one act represented who is normally pigeon-holed (incorrectly, if you ask me) as "country". No, these are Southern Rock songs, from most of the classic artists who made the genre so good for so long. I will admit that at least one of the songs below belongs to a group that's from California....let it go. Their sound is Southern, so they're Southern. And a note to Fanny: Yes, yes, you can probably answer "JJ Cale" to more than one of these, but that's not who I'm looking for and you know it! Your day is coming, sweetie, so for today, go with the obvious.
The usual rules apply (no outside sources, one point for each title and artist, blah blah blah), and this one will stay open until Friday at noon Eastern. Just have fun with it, OK?
1. My friends tell me that I've been such a fool
And I have to stand by and take it baby
All for loving you
2. I ain't never been with a woman long enough
For my boots to get old
We've been together so long now
They both need resoled
3. Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house look like a rummage sale, oh
4. "I'm a faithful follower of Brother John Birch
And I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church
And I ain't even got a garage, you can call home and ask my wife!"
5. He looked to be sixty, and maybe I was ten
Mama used to whip me, but I'd go see him again
I'd clap my hands, stomp my feets, try to stay in time
He'd play me a song or two and then take another drink of wine
6. When you get up in the morning
And the light is hurt your head
The first thing you do when you get up out of bed
Is hit that street a-runnin' and try to beat the masses...
7. It took so long to change my mind
I thought that love was a game
I played around enough to find
No two are ever the same
8. Speedin' down the fast lane
Playin' from town to town
The boys and I have been burnin' it up
Can't seem to slow it down
9. Oh, I'm leavin' here
I'm just a raggedy hobo
Leavin' here
I'm just a raggedy hobo
That woman I'm in love with
Lord, she got to go
10. Actions speak louder than words
And I'm a man of great eperience
I know you've got another man
But I can love you better than him
11. Walkin' up the street you can hear ths sound
Of some bad honky-tonkers really layin' it down
They've seen it all for years and got nothin' to lose
So get out on the floor, shimmy 'til you shake somethin' loose
12. You can make just one mistake
And it can take you to your gravy, honey
One bad move can turn your world upside-down
It's such a shame, 'cause...
13. I'd work twenty-four hours, seven days a week
Just so I could come home and kiss your cheek
I love you in the mornin' and I love you at noon
I love you in the night and take you to the moon
14. Been stuck in airports, terrorized
Sent to meeting, hypnotized
Overexposed, commercialized
15. In a place you only dream of
Where your soul is always free
Silver stages, golden curtains
Filled my head plain as could be
