Lyrically Speaking Day 12 - 11/25/08

First off, a reminder: Both the Sunday and Monday games close at noon Eastern today.

Second...we haven't done a Match-'em-up game in a while, so here's one I really like. Some of the following songs are a bit tough, though, so you've got your work cut out for you. Give me the title and lyrics for the songs below (one point each), then match-'em-up into FIVE SETS OF THREE, based on a magic reason (or Tangredi) that you have to determine for yourself. You'll get TWO points each for each correct triplet. As usual, no outside sources and if you can't be right, be funny. And I guess if pressed I'd have to say that #9 is my favorite, although there's an awful lot of really crappy music represented below, so that don't say much.

1. Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile
The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yeah
They're swept away and nothing is what it seems
The feeling of belonging to your dreams

2. From Bissau to Palau
In the shade of Avalon
From Fiji to Tiree
And the Isles of Ebony

3. I was in your arms, thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home, thinking I'd be strong there

4. They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together, still going strong

5. Wenn getanzt wird, will ich fuehren (When we dance, I want to lead)
auch wenn ihr euch alleine dreht (Even if you're spinning alone)
Lasst euch ein wenig kontrollieren (Let's exercise a little control)
Ich zeige euch wie's richtig geht (I'll show you how it's done right)

6. I've done no harm, I keep to myself
There's nothing wrong with my state of mental health
I like it here with my childhood friend
Here they come, those feelings again!

7. We're heading for venus and still we stand tall
'Cause maybe they've seen us and welcome us all
With so many light years to go and things to be found
I'm sure that we'll all miss her so

8. Too many slaves in this world
Die by torture and pain
Too many people do not see
They're killing themselves, going insane

9. What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
Don't need it now

10. I say we can act if we want to
If we don't, nobody will
And you can act real rude and totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile

11. In the corner of the bar there stands a jukebox
With the best of country music, old and new
You can hear your five selections for a quarter
And somebody else's songs when yours are through

12. There's no need for argument
There's no argument at all
And if you never hear from him
That just means he didn't call
Or vice versa

13. She's turnin' on the heat
She's got the magic touch
She's turnin' on the heat
And it's a little too much
She's turnin' on the heat
And it's a hundred above

14. And I love you best
You're not like the rest
You're there when I need you
You're there when I need....I'm gonna need you

15. Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away

7. We're heading for venus and still we stand tall
'Cause maybe they've seen us and welcome us all
With so many light years to go and things to be found
I'm sure that we'll all miss her so
The Final Countdown - Europe

8. Too many slaves in this world

Too many people do not see
They're killing themselves, going insane

Lady - Little River Band

15. Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
Sounds very familiar...

The fact that I have Europe, and then 2 bands from Australia in here make me think this may be a continental theme (I don't recognize an Asia song in here though).... total guess on the triplets:

1-4-5
2-9-11
3-6-14
7-10-15
8-12-13

About 38 of them or so.

Spoiler
I was going to go with:
"Countdown: two ... one..." (The Final Countdown, the U2 Song, Still the One)

and "awful cliches" (Balls to the Wall, Listen to Your Heart, The Winner Takes it All)

and "Men and Boys (Men At Work, Men Without Hats, Loverboy"

and "The ORINOCO is a RIVER in South AMERICA" (Orinoco Flow, Little River Band, Amerika)

and, um, "I DON'T KNOW why those old men in the bar play DOMINOes for CHANGE every night, but they do" (the song that I DON'T KNOW, Domino, Winds of Change)
Spoiler
But there's probably an easier way.

U2, Van Morrison and Enya are from IRELAND
Abba is from SWEDEN
Shania Twain and Loverboy are from CANADA
Men At Work and Little River Band are from AUSTRALIA
Scorpions (and, I assume, Rammstein) are from GERMANY
Accept is from HAIR-BAND HELL
Let's figure that HAIR-BAND HELL exists only in my mind, and that only a German could rock that enthusiastically and that awfully at the same time.
I think Men Without Hats might also be from Canada
Roxette is more likely to be from Sweden than Australia.
I don't know where Europe is from, but it's more likely to be Sweden than Australia, since, you know, Sweden's actually IN Europe.
That leaves I DON'T KNOW as the missing Australia.

So:
IRELAND: #2 (Enya), #9 (U2), #12 (Van Morrison)
SWEDEN: #1 (Roxette), #3 (Abba), #7 (Europe)
CANADA: #4 (Shania Twain), #10 (Men Without Hats), #13 (Loverboy)
GERMANY: #5 (Rammstein), #8 (Accept), #15 (Scorpions)
AUSTRALIA: #6 (Men at Work), #11 (I don't know), and #14 (Little River Band)

Further, I will now guess that #11 is some atrocity by The Bee Gees

I don't have enough guessed to make a stab at the Bonus. I'm just stuck in the 80's.

Although I think 6 would go with 10 as both bands are from Australia. And 7 with 15 as both are from Europe or tied to Europe.
If those are right and worth a 1/4 of a point, great!

Second...we haven't done a Match-'em-up game in a while, so here's one I really like. Some of the following songs are a bit tough, though, so you've got your work cut out for you. Give me the title and lyrics for the songs below (one point each), then match-'em-up into FIVE SETS OF THREE, based on a magic reason (or Tangredi) that you have to determine for yourself. You'll get TWO points each for each correct triplet. As usual, no outside sources and if you can't be right, be funny. And I guess if pressed I'd have to say that #9 is my favorite, although there's an awful lot of really crappy music represented below, so that don't say much.

1. Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile
The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yeah
They're swept away and nothing is what it seems
The feeling of belonging to your dreams

2. From Bissau to Palau
In the shade of Avalon
From Fiji to Tiree
And the Isles of Ebony

3. I was in your arms, thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home, thinking I'd be strong there

4. They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together, still going strong

5. Wenn getanzt wird, will ich fuehren (When we dance, I want to lead)
auch wenn ihr euch alleine dreht (Even if you're spinning alone)
Lasst euch ein wenig kontrollieren (Let's exercise a little control)
Ich zeige euch wie's richtig geht (I'll show you how it's done right)

6. I've done no harm, I keep to myself
There's nothing wrong with my state of mental health
I like it here with my childhood friend
Here they come, those feelings again!

7. We're heading for venus and still we stand tall
'Cause maybe they've seen us and welcome us all
With so many light years to go and things to be found
I'm sure that we'll all miss her so

8. Too many slaves in this world
Die by torture and pain
Too many people do not see
They're killing themselves, going insane

9. What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
Don't need it now

10. I say we can act if we want to
If we don't, nobody will
And you can act real rude and totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile

11. In the corner of the bar there stands a jukebox
With the best of country music, old and new
You can hear your five selections for a quarter
And somebody else's songs when yours are through

12. There's no need for argument
There's no argument at all
And if you never hear from him
That just means he didn't call
Or vice versa

13. She's turnin' on the heat
She's got the magic touch
She's turnin' on the heat
And it's a little too much
She's turnin' on the heat
And it's a hundred above

14. And I love you best
You're not like the rest
You're there when I need you
You're there when I need....I'm gonna need you

15. Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
Shoot me now
Zippo, Nada, Zilch, NFC

Trios are arranged by home country.

2, 12, and 8? are from Ireland
6, 11, and 14 are from Australia
4, 10, and 1? are from Canada
3, 9? and 13? are from Sweden
I'll go out on a limb and say 5 is from Germany which means Scorpions must be in here, and #15 sounds like lyrics they'd come up with. Let's throw # 7 in with the Germans.
