Over the weekend I saw back-to-back from Netflix: "The History Boys" (pretty good) and "Anzio" (awful). What song figures prominently (i.e., is sung by major characters) in both films?

I haven't seen Anzio, but I'll guess:
Spoiler
Bye Bye Blackbird

Bob is correct. Peter Falk singing Ciao, Ciao Blackbird to some Italian women of questionable repute was about the best part of "Anzio". I certainly didn't learn much about what happened at Anzio, as it quickly devolved into a generic war movie with a handful of American guys (including a very young "Poppie" from Seinfeld!) exchanging bullets with a handful of German guys. The American guys won.

A very young Reni Santoni (Poppie from Seinfeld) starred in the comedy from the 60's called "Enter Laughing." Directed by Carl Reiner, it's a kind of semi-autobiographical story. Rob Reiner had a quick debut in this movie, and the cast also included Shelly Winters, Elaine May and Don Rickles. It was pretty darn funny, if memory serves... :)

Enter Laughing was on TCM not that long ago and I hadn't seen it since I was a mere tyke. Also the showed Five Easy Pieces as well not that much earlier - seeing those two films caused me to generate the following trivia question:

What unites the movies:
Enter Laughing
Lonely Are the Brave
Klute
and Five Easy Pieces

It's also in Melvin and Howard. I love hearing Jason Robards singing it. And Glenn Close did it in Maxie, but not as good (although I am probably the one person in the free world who even knows that movie, much less loves it. Ha!).

Can you tell this is one of my all time favourite songs?

I love Maxie! How come it never comes around on the late show?

Harumph.
