WWTBAM Bored

I've managed to catch a cold. It's getting worse by the minute. [Cue violins] Rather than go to a boundary meeting, as I was supposed to, I took a cold tablet, drank some OJ and started reading Twilight.

It's a very engrossing book, so engrossing that I am almost finished with hit.

Now wait, did the girls (maybe just one?) already read the series? If so, have they expressed interest in the movie?

It is definitely a very fast read.

I just finished it, and am now reading New Moon.

Big J is totally enthusiastic about the series, and kept at me to read it.

I am so psyched that he is really sharing with me, so I am.


I must say though, the phrase Sweet Valley High meets Lestat seems somewhat descriptive LOL.

If you ladies like vampire stuff of the more (ahem) adult variety, my sister likes all of the Sherrilyn Kenyon books and gives them to me to read.

They're not exactly vampires, but it mixes in a bunch of mythology and gods and stuff. It's a pretty intricate universe.

The Friends of the Library booksale has about sixty different categories. Besides general fiction, we have Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Occult & Horror, etc.

We're getting really confused about where a new genre like "Vampire Romance" should go!

tribelet one is going to the movie Saturday - a gang of 12 teenage girls - I pity the folks stitting near them.

tribelet one is going to the movie Saturday - a gang of 12 teenage girls - I pity the folks stitting near them.

I think the term "gang" is a fairly accurate description if you are referencing your 15-year-old. I have a son that age and the girls have him scratching his head constantly...

I need a scorecard to see who is a friend today and who is not - I hate it when I see one of her classmates somewhere - I'm not sure how friendly I'm supposed to be.

Don't you have subcategories for HIstorical Romance v. Contemporary Romance? It seems to me that for a while there was a special Time Travel Romance genre as well (kind of melding the two).

I think the books I'm talking about are just in the romance category, although they're not in the traditional vein of those (my dad used to call it PG Porn. Ha!). The Twilight books should just be in the YA section (unless you have subcategories there, too?).

She should give you friend and foe lists. Or maybe get a dry erase and keep a colour coded tote board for you.

I hadn't even heard about this until about a month ago when one of my Facebook friends was reading it. Are they good? I'm not at all into vampires or anything like that.

As a side note I saw the actors from the movie on the today show this morning and they seemed to be super uncomfortable to be on camera!

Sure, each category sorter is free to divide the books into whatever subcategories seem appropriate. I think the Romance sorter feels the vampire stuff is a little too out there for her section.

Luckily, the Occult & Horror sorter is willing to accept just about anything rejected from other categories.

The poor Occult & Horror sorter probably feels short changed. She'd do much better at the Friends of the Blockbuster sale!

Amazon (yes, I just checked) puts the ones I'm talking about in two categories: Romance>Fantasy, Futuristic & Ghost and straight old Science Fiction and Fantasy. I would say Romance>Science Fiction and Fantasy because they're like a cross between Nora Roberts and Neil Gaiman.

But aren't all books fantasy (non-fiction ones, anyway)?

Read it to see what the buzz was all about. Decent read, maybe a step or two up in writing style from Da Vinci Code (IMO a wildly popular book whose subject matter far outstripped the writer's capabilities). Many of the scenes are tailor-made for translation onto the movie screen, whether the author intended that or not (JK Rowling was guilty of the same thing, though not as often). The trailers I've seen reflect that. Can see why the teenaged girls are all atwitter about it. But wasn't interested enough in the characters to follow them to the other books and find out what happens at the end. Maybe because I am not now nor have ever been a teenaged girl. To use the word of the hour, meh.

The producers did a pretty good job with the first three HP movies; as GSabc points out, many of Rowling's scenes film extremely well just as she wrote them.

Then you get to Goblet of Fire, and they spend agonizing long minutes on the scene with the dragon, which was very short in the book. My beef with that and with Phoenix is how much they had to leave out to extend the action scenes. I hope they add back much of the stuff they jettisoned in the two movies they're making of Hallows.
