Mr. Obama will be known as "Renegade" (move over, Lorenzo Lamas). Michelle, a woman of many talents, will be referred to as "Renaissance." Malia Obama's name will be "Radiance," while little sister Sasha's will be "Rosebud."

And what of the Bidens? We were hoping the Secret Service would stick to the "R" theme and dub Joe "Rogaine." Alas, his name will be "Celtic." His wife Jill will be "Capri."

I think you might get quite a bit of argument about which is correct and which is incorrect.

Or at least that they are both correct.

A good example is the original Celtic sports team, Celtic F.C., of Glasgow. The team was formed in 1887 by Irish immigrants to Scotland and they named the team Celtic which they pronounced Seltic, just like the basketball team from Boston. Surely Irish and Scots would pronounce it they way they thought was correct.

In any case the Celts didn't call themselves that. The Greeks named them Keltoi but in Latin they spelled it Celtae, the French from whom English got the word spelled it Celtes. The French definitely pronounced it Seltic.

Keltic seems to have been a recent academic invention but it has caught on so people seem to think it is more correct.

Its so the Secret Service won't get confused about which person they are talking about. Its not code names as in secret codes, but as in radio codes. The words are chosen from a list of easy to understand combination of words that wouldn't be used in normal conversation.

Thanks for the explanation. The reasoning you gave makes sense in context, but I still think it's just being unnecessarily complicated. In a crunch time emergency, wouldn't it be easier and faster to spit out "Michelle and Tasha" than "Renaissance and Radiance"?

If avoiding confusion is really the goal, why on earth would they choose two nearly identical code words such as Renegade and Renaissance. Those two names would be much easier to confuse with each other than Barack and Michelle.

We had a guy who worked with us for a couple years we nicknamed Renegade. He was ass ugly, always wore a trenchcoat, was usually drunk.... not the type of guy you'd want to come across in a dark alley....

He is part of our vast and bizarre Overnights mythology as he is one of the ones we still talk about all the time today....

If I had been one who bashed President-Elect Obama during the election season, I might understand getting attacked as I was. However, if one will review the record, one will discover that I was quite respectful of all the candidates. All the way back to the Primary season. I afforded the same respect to all the candidates, even the ones with whom I disagreed on a plethora of policy issues.

The idea that certain perfectly valid words and phrases are now "off-limits" because the President-Elect happens to be a racial minority is distressing to me.

I'm not side-stepping anything. My post was in response to Skoop's mentioning of the song by Styx, which has lyrics that happen to include the word "jig," which is in no way related to the President-Elect. The idea that a thread can't spin off onto tangents is laughable.

People who equate the word "jig" with a racial epithet are being ridiculous.

For the record, the only time I have ever uttered that particular epithet is whilst singing along with the music in Spike Lee's movie, School Daze.

I find nothing that would support your claim that "the jig is up" has been "racially offensive for many, many years."

Referring to a black person as a "jig" would be offensive, but that phrase has nothing to do with that.

"The jig is up" has no racial connotation to it at all! The most common given background for the saying relates to Irish jigs and the end of a dance. There also is some history of its use in England to relate to when a trick or joke is discovered.

The world has enough issues and made-up with regards to race and ethnicity without people creating even more out of thin air.

Fanny, you owe a huge apology to Cal for even implying that he would say something with racial connotations.
