The lowly stick, a universal plaything powered by a child's imagination, landed in the National Toy Hall of Fame on Thursday along with the Baby Doll and the skateboard.

The three were chosen to join the Strong National Museum of Play's lineup of 38 classics ranging from the bicycle, the kite and Mr. Potato Head to Crayola crayons, marbles and the Atari 2600 video game system.

Curators said the stick was a special addition in the spirit of a 2005 inductee, the cardboard box. They praised its all-purpose, no-cost, recreational qualities, noting its ability to serve either as raw material or an appendage transformed in myriad ways by a child's creativity.

My brother always got the stick.

Us girls were always left with just the cardboard box.

Yes. But if you did hurt them, you could turn the cardboard tube into a magic wand and fix everything again.

We gave my brother the paper towel tube, telling him that he was littler than us, so he got the littler sword. He bought it until he was about 7.

Well, and Tiny Tears and Betsy Wetsy, both of whom molded in their crotch because they wet. An option not wise in toys.

The paper towel tube is the paws-down favorite of herjosie's big sister. Hexe, the 14 year-old dachshund, ALWAYS gets the tube to carry around as long as she wants. Sometimes she tears it apart, but lately she just takes it with her when she curls up in her cozy bed. Her age is really starting to show.

During the Christmas season we also give her the tubes from wrapping paper, and watching her try to walk through doors was always cause for giggles. Hexe loves it when I sit on the floor to wrap gifts, and wants to sniff everything first. Then she takes it upon herself to guard the wrapped presents under the tree. She can't hear very well, and is nearly blind, but her "sniffer" still works just fine. I don't know how many more Christmases we'll have Hexe with us, but it's definitely her favorite holiday.
